I am trying to trace my Great X2 Grandfather who was Miles McGrath.  I know he emigrated to America in 1855 when he was about 11.   He birth year is 1844 in Ireland.   My oldest living rleative says our fmily came from County Sligo.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland but there were no Miles/Myles McGrath baptismal records in Co. Sligo.

Do you have his parents names from his death record?

You may want to add Miles' story to our XO Chronicles site https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-dat…

    Have you considered DNA testing?

  • Roger thanks for the reply.  I will post te story on XO Chronicles as you suggest.  I don't hve his parents names and will search for a death record.  I have had my DNA testing done through Ancestry.  Is there a site in Ireland that Ican up load my DNA to for research purposes?  I am not sure about County Sligo as his birth county.  It was what I was told where are family was from but he could have been born elsewhere.   Is there a way to check other possibilities without doing each indidvidual county?

I searched for Miles McGrath baptismal records for all of Ireland on the subscription site Roots Ireland. There was an 1838 record in Co. Longford, an 1841 record in Co. Down, an 1845 record in Co. Waterford and an 1846 record in Waterford. I copied the 1845 record transcription which is below. Parents names are needed to confirm any of the records located. It is also possible that Miles was baptized in a church that no longer has records back to his baptism year.

Regarding DNA, there is no site in Ireland where you can post your DNA data to see matches. Folks in Ireland who have tested are on the data bases for Ancestry, Family Tree DNA, My Heritage, 23 and Me. etc. There is a volunteer run site called Gedmatch www.gedmatch.com   You can load your raw DNA data to Gedmatch and see if you match people who tested with another company (and also loaded their data to Gedmatch).
