Greetings:
My sister and brother and I are visiting Ireland 15-26 April 2024 and hope to find out more about where John Maher and Julia Murphy lived before emigrating to the US. They are our second great-grandparents.
Our Irish-American grandmother was Julia Maher, born in St. Louis, Missouri and her father was James Maher born 1867 in St. Louis, Missouri, mother Margret Atkinson of English ancestry born in St. Louis 1872 and from the New Jersey area for some generations. My grandmother's father was John Maher, her mother was Julia Murphy.
Here is what we have researched, from Ancestry.com):
John (M.?) Maher born 1835 in Thurles Parish, Tipperary, died 1913 in St. Louis, Missouri, IUSA, became a US citizen
John's wife Julia Murphy, born 1840 in Bally Vista (which I know is not the correct spelling, probably Baile na Mhistigh maybe near Emly, died 1927 in St. Louis, Missouri
John's parents may have been: father Jeremiah Maher born 1814 in Ireland, died 1870 in Ireland, mother Julia Brophy Maher, born 1818 in Ireland and died 1883 in Roscrea, Ireland
Julia's parents may have been: Edmond Murphy III, born 1790 Balle Vista, died 1862 in St. Louis, Missouri, mother Ellen Carmody, born1804 in Limerick, died 1863 in St. Louis
Family was likely all Catholic. It appears that John and Julia emigrated to St. Louis, Missouri, and her parents Edmond and Ellen came over before they died. John parents stayed in Ireland.
Hope this is helpful and look forward to any contacts we may have.
Thanks,
Theresa Nelson

Theresa,
The town is Ballyvistea, Emly. An Edmond Murphy was living there in 1850 (Griffith Valuation). You might want to contact St. Ailbe the parish church. They might know someone to take you around. I am not a volunteer but I think there might be an Ireland Reaching Out form to contact someone locally.

Theresa,
There are several Murphy gravestones at Emly Cemetery which is next to St. Ailbe. You can find them listed on Historicgraves a free website.

Here is one for a Edmond Murphy perhaps one of Julia's relatives?? Per a book on the history of Emly by Michael and Liam O'Dwyer, Edmond "took part in the Fenian attack on Emly Barracks in March 1867". In addition to the memorial below, "there is a stained glass window in his honor near the back of the church". "He was a famous bonesetter and people came from far and near to avail his services. He never accepted payment and when he died his remains were shouldered from Ballyvistea to Emly."

Theresa,
You might already know. Julia had other siblings- Elizabeth 1835, Johanna 1838, and Edmond 1841. The Edmond that fought in the Fenian attack parents were Edmond Murphy and Honora Ryan, born Sept. 1845. (Info from RootsIreland)

Wow, thank you Mary for this wealth of information! This sounds like the correct Julia Murphy and father Edmond and mother Ellen. It is fascinating to learn of his involvement with the Fenians. I will follow up with the church as you suggested.
