Hello. I'm trying to get a birth certificate for my grandfather James Davis. I have that he was born 30/6/1888 Cookstown Northern Ireland. His father was William Davis and mother Elizabeth Hughes. James arrived in New York 3/4/1910 on the Caledonia. I have a relative that has on his family tree James Davis being born 13/6/1887 Muff, Moneymore, Londerry, Northern Ireland. So I'm not sure which is correct but I'm finding Elizabeth Hughes as the mother. I did order a birth certificate online and they haven't responded so far. I gave them both location and dates. Thank you for your help. William Davis Las Vegas, NV USA

You can see the birth register at irishgenealogy.ie (civil records).

Thank you so much Patricia and Elwyn. I don't know why Elizabeth was signing her name Davison during the 1901 census but it looks like she must be my great grandmother. I'm trying to get the documents together so that I can become a citizen of Ireland by descent. We visited one month ago for a week. We had a great time with our family of 7 and were driven around by a hired tour driver. I'm looking to come back next July.

Variations in the spelling of names was common in Ireland. The modern focus on a single “correct” version wasn’t something that troubled our ancestors.

By the way if you are ordering a certified copy of James’ birth certificate (which you will need as part of any passport/nationality application) you have a choice of ordering from GRO Roscommon at €20 or from GRONI at £15. GRONI is a bit cheaper. It may also be a bit faster, especially as you can pay on-line. Certificates are usually posted out within a week.
