I am at a standstill for finding the origin of my family in Galway West. My Grandfather was John Mulkearn born in Mullingar where his father had moved to after marrying his wife. John's father my Great Grandfather was a James Mulkern b. 1854 d 1921 and he was married to an Alice McElroy from Antrim. His father, I believe was a Timothy Mulkern b 1835 d 1913 married to a Margaret Davin at this point I believe he was from West Galway. There are lots of Mulkerns on Inishmaan in Griffiths Valuation so I do belive that is where his family came from. But I am stuck with no firm records on Ancestry, MyHeritage or FindmyPast to bridge the document gap. Can anyone help?

Patricia:
The father of James was John rather than Timothy. Roots Ireland has an August 6, 1854 baptismal record in Clifden RC parish for a James Mulkerrin with parents John Mulkerrin and Margaret Davin. Possibly this record is for your ancestor. I did not find any baptismal records for siblings.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Roger,
yes I have that information. I mistakenly put Timothy and it should have read John. You are correct. So would Clifden have been a parish in its own right or would it have covered a wider area sometimes they have Clifden or any other place as effectively a dicocesan area but you dont know until you go to the front page of the archal records and then it will say which parish. I hope I am being clear. I am trying to pin down more precisely the location of their marriage (other than Clifden itself). Also I picked up the association of Timothy and Nellie (?) through a family tree but not sure this is based on anything other than supposition?
Thank you very much, anyway

Patricia:
The RC parish of Clifden covers two civil parishes on the western coast of Co. Galway (Ballindoon and Omey). Clifden town where the church is located is part of Omey civil parish. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clifden
Clifden RC records actually start in 1838. Since I was not able to find a marriage record or any other baptismal records for siblings, I'm speculating that the family started in Inishmaan, migrated to the Clifden area around 1853-1854 and then moved further east within Ireland. The Aran Island RC records do not begin until 1872.
