Hi,
I am looking to find details of my ancestors that were situated in Oughterard from at least 1829 when my 3rd great-grandfather Peter Savage married the widow Mary Ryan (nee Larner). My 2nd great-grandfather is buried in the Kilcummin cemetry and is listed in the headstones research.
I would like to find out more about Peter and Mary and their origins and also any information about the Savage family borne from this marriage and if they exist in Oughterard today.
Many thanks
Shaun

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
Oughterard RC records start in 1809. I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not find any baptismal records for a Peter Savage back 1810 or earlier. I did locate the 1829 marriage record which you mentioned in your message. I also found a baptismal record for a son Richard in 1830 (see below). There were no Savage records in Kilcummin parish in the Tithes or the Griffiths.
Getting back to Richard, I located an 1857 marriage record in Oughterard between Richard Savage and Bridget Kenny. There were at least six children: Peter John 1858 Mary 1860 Jane 1863 Thomas 1865 Elizabeth Margaret 1869 Richard 1872 By the way, here is Richard's civil birth record and the family was living in the townland of Clare which is a very small townland which I believe is/was part of the town of Oughterard.

Looks like Bridget died in 1894 https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…
Here are the father Richard and daughter Elizabeth in the 1901 census http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Oughterard/Faug…
I did not see any members of the family in the 1911 census and was unable to find a death record for Richard Sr.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank Roger. That is a very detail response, and much more detailed than I could have expected.
There is some mention in the family that Peter may have been a Protestant minister that converted to Catholicism to marry the widowed Mary. It is also thought that he may have come from the north of Ireland. My thoughts were that he may have been baptised in Oughterard for the marriage. If he did come from the north then my assumption is that Oughterard was chosen because of Mary. Otherwise I have no idea. Maybe he was a minister that was sent to the area?

Hi Savobien
This is a link to Richard Savage Snr in 1911 living with his son Richard in Galway City.

Was just searching some information on my own family history when I came across this and from the names and details mentioned I believe we would be related your also the person who has a post about Dempsey mill ???
-
I did post about the Dempsey Mill somewhere on this site.<p>
My great-grandmother was Agnes Dempsey, I think from Loughrea. Agnes married my great-grandfather Richard Joseph Savage in 1905. Does this match what you have found?
