I have Samuel Bates (1816) married Catherine Jane Grey Temple (1818- 1902) of Garrison Hill. They had eight children. James, Matilda (deceased) Matilda, Mary-Jane, Matilda, Catherine, John, Robert.
John Bates appears to have travelled to the USA and spent time working for a Temple family before returning to Ireland where he married Margaret Roulston. I've been trying to discover Samuel Bates' parents and expand my knowledge of the Bates family history. Can anyone help?

The subscription site Roots Ireland has a December 9 1836 marriage for a Samuel Beats (as transcribed) to a Catherine Temple. The marriage was in the Donaghmore Presbyterian church. Samuel was from Garrison and it appears Catherine was from Bohanboy.
Although Roots Ireland has baptismal records for Donaghmore Presbyterian church back to 1803, I did not find a record for Samuel Bates.
Possibly his father was James based on the name of the oldest son.

Kia Ora Roger, Thank you for the information. As my Bates family were parishioners of the Donaghmore Presbyterian Church the marriage record would certainly confirm that which I had discovered. The naming tradition may lead us to trace more of the family line. I found the John Bates living in the US with the Temple family in the US census which confirmed a family story that John had gone to the US and made good either from gold mining or investment so much so that he returned to Ireland and purchased the family farms in Carnowen and Killygordon as well as marrying Margaret Roulston. regards.
