Hi - I'm wondering if there is an archive of the landowners' papers for Roscommon (or other counties). My McHugh relatives are listed in Griffiths Valuation as leasing from Thomas Johnson Barton in Clooncoose, Ardcarn parish. Since there are few records of the farmers from that time, are there any records for that landowner that might give me a few more scraps of information? Thank you!

Cathy,
Griffith's Valuation record the McHugh's in the Civil Parish of Tumna.
It is unlikely that there are any further records for the Barton Estate. Further detail should be available at the Land Office in the Irish Life Building in Abbey Street, Dublin.

Cathy,
Unfortunately this does not help with you McHugh research but might provide some background on Thomas Barton Johnston.
I assume this is the correct Thomas Johnston Barton. On Ancestry, I found he had other holdings he was leasing out in Roscommon and several petty court cases in Roscommon where he was the complainant. He was living in Dublin at the time. He died in Dublin in 1864 leaving his sons a 14,000 pound estate per his will.
' Thomas Johnston Barton was born in September 1802.2 He was the son of Hugh Barton and Anne Johnston.2 He married Frances Morris, daughter of Edward Morris and Hon. Mary Erskine, on 25 March 1830, (says 25 March 1830 although this date must be incorrect since both the husband and the wife died in the 1860s.)2 He died on 4 December 1864 at age 62.2
He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.)2 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.)2 He lived at Glendalough House, Annamoe, County Wicklow, IrelandG.1Children of Thomas Johnston Barton and Frances Morris

Cathy,
Please see attached in relation to the Land Valuation Office in Dublin. It will give you an idea how you can go about researching the McHugh farm holding.
Please note that here is a "John McHugh" in the parish of Ardcarn.

Cathy,
I am curious what info are you looking for. I can research info on your McHugh family or are you just looking for land info? There were McHughs living in Clooncoose in 1901.
