Hi, just joined after doing some searching and wondering if anyone could help me.

If I go backwards it might be easier to explain.

My 3rd Great Grandfather Bernard Frairy married C/Katherine Brackin (spelling various on records) 1863 in the Parish of Clonguish Newtownformbes. They emigrated 1872 to Cambuslang, Lanarkshire in Scotland. Somewhere along the way he changed the spelling from Friary to Friery. My Mother is Friery.

Bernards Father was Thomas Friary and he married an Eleanor Fox. Marriage record spells the names Thomas Frieary and Ellenorna Fox. They married 1831 in same Parish as Bernard.

Thomas Father was called Thomas Prior and this is where I'm stuck. When Thomas and Eleanors son was born - Bernard, the name was actually spelt Prior. Pronounced Irish-Gaelic as Friary, because the family was illiterate an English Priest spelt Prior the way it sounded - Frairy.

So with my searches beyond Thomas and Eleanor I'm struggling because I'm not sure if the names would be written Prior or Frairy.

Hope that makes sense!
Thanks for any help.

Liz.

  • Dear Liz:

Thank you for your query to the Ireland Reaching Out message board.

I have looked at Roots Ireland and I note what you have stated in your comments.  I believe that you will have to look at both surnames going backwards (pre-1830) in order to try to find further ancestors.

For the record, Thomas had a sister, Mary and I copy her birth record as well as Thomas' and their parent's marriage record.

There are older registers in Longford which is where the family appears to have resided as both children were baptised there and the parents were married there.

If you need further assistance, please let me know.

The very best of luck with your research.  You have done very well with your family tree to be able to go back to 1830.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.
