Patrick McCloskey and his wife Catherine (maiden name unknown) emigrated to Canada likely in the 1840's with his brother Bernard (born about 1814) . Their 2 elsdes children are listed on the 1861 census in Canada as being born in Ireland - daughter Mary (born about 1842) and a son James (born about 1844). They settled in the Old Chelsea area of Quebec in the Gatineau Hills area, just across the river from Ottawa. Patrick's tombstone in St. Stephen's churchyard lists his age at 78 when he did in 1885 and notes he was a "Native of County Derry". Another McCloskey family in the area is Michael McCloskey and his wife Mary (maiden name might be McGonnigal). Michael was born about 1814 and likely emigrated to Canada in the 1830's. Any information on their origins in County Derry would be greatly appreciated.

The 1831 census for Co Londonderry/Derry has mostly survived. I found 1186 people named McCloskey. 112 Patricks and 34 Bernards. So very common names.
I searched the on-line RC baptism records for the children Mary & James but did not find any matches for them with the right parents. Not all parishes have records for the 1840s so this may be the explanation.
Possibly DNA testing may be a way of matching with others who have additional information about where the family originate. Family Tree DNA reportedly has more people with Ulster roots than any other company. That obviously increases the chances of finding a match. You might want to try them or, if you have already tested, you can transfer your results to them for no fee.
The North of Ireland Family History Society is running an Ulster DNA project in conjunction with Family Tree DNA and can offer testing kits at a reduced price. http://www.nifhs.org (Go to DNA project on the website). You don’t need to be a member of the NIFHS to participate in the DNA project.

I am searching for records and DNA Ireland connections to my gg grandfather Patrick McCloskey b. 1806 Ireland d. Nov 1866 -NB, Canada and
his sister Sarah McCloskey b. 1818 d. April 1843 NB, Canada. The 1851 Canada census indicates that Patrick was born in Londonderry, Ireland and arrived in
the Colony in 1832 so it’s possible that Patrick could be showing on the 1831 Londonderry census you mentioned.

Eileen,
If Patrick born 1806 was a head of household in 1831 and living in Co. Londonderry, then I would certainly expect him to be on the 1831 census. Your problem will be identifying which of the 112 other Patricks was yours. The census is available on this site:
