Hello !

I'm hoping for some help regarding the location in County Mayo, of this 7 year old boy who seems to be up to no good!

He's my grandfather on my mums side - Patrick James Mangan. I've yet to find a birth for him as the paper trail (marriage / cenus / etc ) give years ranging between 1872 and 1882.  His marriage in 1911 tells me he was 29 and his fathers name was John, there was a witness named Julia Mangan (don't know who she was ).  I know a lot about his life from 1909 as he was in London by that time in the Metropolitan Police - got sacked for striking and imprisoned for assult in 1919 (various newspaper reports on that event).

I'm currenty exploring birth records for Mayo with John Mangan as a father - by process of elimination.  It would help greatly if I was able to pinpoint a location, hoping it may be near the location referred to in the report.   Thanks for reading.

  • Jan, As you probably know, the Metropolitan Police website said that he once gave his birth date as 15 Nov 1880.

I found the following baptismal record on rootireland. Perhaps keep it in mind due to the Nov. date?

    Name:   James Mangan

    Baptism:              16-Nov-1879

    Address:               Dooagh

    Parish/District:   ACHILL

    County  MAYO

    Roman Catholic

    Father:  John Mangan

    Mother:               Peggy Moran

    Sponsors:

                   Pat Moran

                   Mary Moran

Do you know the names of Patrick's children? If so, kindly send them.

  • Thank you - he had three girls to Theresa Fett, whom he married in1911 - Mary Veronica / Patricia Theresa / Kathleen Theresa ( my mum)

I’ve never seen that birth on Met Police Site - can you send a link please .  That date is on 1939 register - so that’s one consistency at least!

  • Jan,

I think it's more likely that his first name would be in a birth record, not a second name. Looking on the civil registration site at irishgenealogy.ie, there are seven Patrick Mangars born between 1875 and 1880 with a father named John. I did not want to download them all here when you can find them easily, but here are some brief details:

1874 Claremorris group reg. number 145

1875 Castlebar group reg. number 284

    1875 Castlebar       "       "             053

    1876 Ballina            "        "             614

    1877 Newport         "        "             188

    1880 Newport         "        "              494

    1880 Newport         "         "             025

The marriage record from 1911 shows he was 29, thus born in 1882, so something is off....not unusual though.

    Regards,

  • Thank you  … did you click the link and have a read of the newspaper report ?  Wondering which of these would be  in the area - I’m afraid I’ve not been able to pinpoint where the event took place .. thanks for your help.
