I'm hoping that someone familiar with place names in the area can discern from the attached obituary where my great-grandfather was from. I have been searching for years for additional information on him and just today found this obituary that had been posted to Ancestry.com.  I have been unable to find the original and the copy attached is really hard to read.  I've spent the whole day going over maps and searching but I can't come up with any place names that make sense. Please take a look at the attached obit and see if you recognize the place names. Even and educated guess would be appreciated.

Patrick was born in County Kerry around 1857. He had a sister named Anne, who became a nun. Patrick emigrated to the US in 1882 and married my great-grandmother Bridget Clare McCarthy (born in Renard in 1858 to Timothy McCarthy and Jane Shea) in 1888 in Chicago. He died in 1909.

Any help would be much appreciated!

  • Patrick,

I tried to find Patrick in Irishgenealogy Church records and came across someone else baptism record. He was from Filemore, Caherciveen. Maybe where Patrick was from.

You might want to look at townlands in Kerry.

  • Mike I apologize I used the wrong name in last message,

I checked RootsIreland and did not find a Patrick Foley from Filmore.

Per Irishgenealogy, Church Records, Michael Sullivan of Filmore was baptized in 1860. His sponsors were Patrick and Ellen Foley, perhaps Patrick's parents or relatives??

  • Mike,

Several years ago I found this info not sure of the source-

The Roman Catholic parish of Caherciveen which includes the Civil Parishes of Caher and Killinane has been in existence since the early nineteenth century. By 1890 there were two churches in the parish - Holy Cross, Caherciveen (now the O'Connell Memorial Church) and Our Lady of the Assumption at Filemore.

    The name might have changed.

Maybe, you can contact parish to see if they can help you.

In Caherciveen, there is an old cemetery. I noticed one of the gravesites had a Eugene Foley. Unfortunately not transcribed and hard to read. Wasn't that Patrick's son's name?

  • Mike:

The subscription site FindMyPast.ie has a baptismal record in Cahersiveen RC parish for a Patrick Foley with father Denis Foley and mother Catherine Moran. The baptism occurred in March 1857 (no exact date in March). You can find this record on the parish register  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0658

I believe this family lived in the townland of Coars. There were at least four younger children after Patrick: Catherine 1864 Ellen 1866 Ann 1869 John 1872

The sixth record at this link has the civil birth record for Ann

  • Mike:

Coars is about six miles from Foilmore (Filemore). Foilmore would have been a larger townland/village with a church etc. Possibly Patrick said he was from Filemore rather than Coars because it was a bigger village.

  • Thank you all for the wonderful work you have done. I am deeply grateful! I believe that the Patrick Foley of Coars is my great-grandfather. Three of his daughters were named Catherine, Ellen, and Anne.  And his only son was named Eugene. It's certainly a remarkable coincidence if it is not him.

You have given me a lot to work with!

    Thank you so much!!!
