Hi there.  In what I am asking may sound pedantic to some people, but I am trying to ascertain the correct Passenger ship that my Great Grandfather came to Australia on.  In my research I have come across a few entries with the name of John Morrissey in the year of 1885 from Tipperary, Ireland.  I have also discovered that 3 of my GGF's older brothers came to Australia as well.  William and Patrick Morrissey (Page 323 - WWW.archives.qld.gov.au) arrived in Brisbane on the Duke of Buccleuch on 23rd September 1885 and Daniel Morrissey arrived in Brisbane on the Bulimba on 3rd March 1883.

I have found at least 3 entries. I am trying to determine which is the correct Passenger Shipping List.

1) 19th April 1885 on SS Aberdeen in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

2) 23rd September 1885 on Duke of Buccleuch in Brisbane on (Page 321 - WWW.archives.qld.gov.au)

3) 25th October 1885 on SS Aberdeen in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

In one of the recent Australian documentary series of W.D.Y.T.Y.A. I can recall there was an Australian celebrity inside this particular building in Northern Ireland where it keeps the official records of all Passenger Shipping lists of Irish people migrating to other countries like Australia and America.

Would it be possible if someone can supply me with information regarding the correct information of the Passenger List of my Great Grandfather as well as an email address of the building in Northern Ireland as I would dearly love to have a copy of the official Passenger List of my ancestors migrating to Australia.

Thank you in advance.

Colin

  • Colin,

In general, the authorities in Britain & Ireland didn’t keep passenger lists for folk leaving. (They had no real interest in who was leaving).  And as far as Australia is concerned there were very few direct sailings from Ireland to Australia. Most folk from here went to London, Southampton or Plymouth and sailed from there.

The building in Northern Ireland you are referring to is probably PRONI (the public record office for Northern Ireland).

    https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/campaigns/public-record-office-northern-ire…

They do have some passenger lists (and some of their lists are searchable on-line). What these are, are the commercial records of J & J Cooke, a shipping agent in Londonderry who kept very good records, for their own commercial reasons, of their sailings from Derry to Quebec, Montreal, St John NB and Philadelphia. The records cover the years 1846 to 1870 or thereabouts. One or two other ships agents records have partially survived, and there is also the Irish Emigration Database at the Mellon Centre for Migration Studies, Omagh.

    https://mellonmigrationcentre.com/about-us/irish-emigration-database-ie…

They have compiled a database from things like adverts in newspapers for missing relatives, and letters that people sent back to Ireland which mention how “cousin William” is doing, and so on.

But there are no comprehensive shipping lists in Britain or Ireland of passengers to Australia. What there is was compiled on arrival in Australia and is to be found on the usual commercial sites like Ancestry and  Findmypast.

  • Hi,   Daniel Morrissey, I see on the ship record he was married.
Do you know who is wife is?

William and Patrick, were either married to a Sarah or was she a sister?

The arrival records in TROVE should give the information as these were all assisted passengers.

  • Hi Margot

Thank you for your reply. Yes, Daniel Morrissey was married to a Margaret Ryan on 18th July 1887 in Brisbane. They had 3 children William (I have a photo of him) Margaret and Mary.   Few years later, they moved down to Sydney to live. On 5th September 1914, Daniel was killed by falling off a tram in Sydney.

William was married to a Johanna Ryan on 16th October 1887 in Brisbane. They had 5 children. Margaret, William, Stephen, Johanna & John. William died on 15th September 1936 in Brisbane.

I cannot find any trace of Patrick after he arrived in Brisbane with his brother on that day.

The only Sarah that I know regarding my ancestors, she is my GGFs (John Morrissey) & brothers Aunt who came to Australia with her older brother Michael on the ship Fairlie arriving in Sydney on the 29th April 1863.

The only record of the newspaper clipping of the ship I don't have is my Great Grandfather John Morrissey, as I cannot ascertain which is the correct entry.

    Any information will be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Colin
