Hi, my great, great grandparents Patrick Edward O'Loughlin and Elizabeth (Eliza) Jane Mulqueeney, both from Ennistymon, emigrated to Adelaide in 1857, arriving aboard the Caucasian on Christmas Day. I've found it very difficult to obtain accurate info on either of their lives in Clare, despite searching the usual ancestry sites. Patrick was born about 1832 and Eliza about 1840, and appear to have been married (both Catholics) in 1857 before emigrating, although location unclear. If anyone has any info or can point me to sites to acquire records, please let me know. Thanks, Neil.

  • Neil,

Ennistimon is in the RC parish of Kilmanaheen, Clare. The parish baptism records begin in 1870. The marriage records in 1823; but they are held at the Clare Heritage and Genealogical Centre, so you would need to contact them. There is one O'Loughlin in Ennistimon in the 1901 census named Michael, born about 1855. His occupation is given as slater and plasterer, his wife is Mary, and children are Thomas, Bridget, Susan and Norah.

    Carolyn

The attached may be of interest. Ennistimon/Ennistymon is the nearest town to Kilshanny.

  • Neil,

Please see attached in relation to the surnames - Mulqueeny and O'Loughlin in the parishes of Kilmanaheen, Carran and Dysert.

Mulqueeny in Kilmaneheen at Callluragh, Knockbrack and Newtown

O'Loughlin in the parishes of Carran and Dysert which are North East of Ennistymon.

Those records can be accessed for free at  www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy.

Clare County library  www.clarelibrary.ie  may help, if you have not already checked it.

  • https://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/united_irishmen_by_…; United Irishmen of North Clare 1798 rebellion, there are a number of Mulqueeney's listed but in particular Patrick and Thomas Mulqueeney from Clonyogan which is in the townland of Moy about a mile from Lahinch village. There are also a number of O'Loughlins listed. My own family came from Moy/Lahinch/Ennistymon so I know the area well. There are still O'Loughlin families locally from Ennistymon and Lahinch, in fact Donough O'Loughlin has a shop in the main street in Lahinch for as long as I can remember, the shop used to be called Sue's after his mother but I think the last time I looked it was called O'Loughlins. It would be worth your while to call and inquire about the O'Loughlin connections. I recollect the name Mulqueeney mentioned by a relative of mine in conversation, I should be in Clare in September and I will make enquiries but possibly there are still Mulqueeneys living locally. I hope you have a wonderful trip and make new discoveries and friendships, Clare is a really special place, make enquiries in the older pubs, if I hear any more information , I will post.
