Since Maurice's first child was named Laurence, my guess is that Maurice's father may also have been named Laurence.  "Lyons" may have been a variation on that?

It might help to look at the original marriage record, the one actually signed by Morris and Ellen.  Have a look at what the register says. It might say something other than Lyons but which the transcriber took to be Lyons.  Or it might be Lyons. Or it might be Laurence but sounded like Lyons in Morris's Irish accent. Or it might be something else. The town clerk of Bennington likely holds this record. Good luck.

I too am puzzled by the name Lyons, usually Lyons is a surname, could it be that Morris's parents were unmarried ?  I also noticed that Morris says his age is 45 years in 1892 which would make his year of birth 1847,  will keep checking.

If 1847 is correct, he was married at 16.  I'm guessing he was born before 1847; rgw poster says 1837-1841. 

I have all of the documents above but thank you for posting. I have looked for a father named Laurence with no luck. Also, I have the actual marriage record for his second marriage to Ellen Graves and it also says his father is named Lyons.
