I am looking for the family of Catherine Murphy born 1851 Badela, Co Mayo. Her father was James Murphy born about 1823 Co Mayo.

She married Patrick Loftus born 1843 Maypoley Co Mayo

They married 1869 in Burslem, Stoke on Trent, England. The first time I can find them is the 1871 census in Stoke on Trent.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and found one Catherine Murphy baptismal record around 1851. Bekan RC parish would include the town of Ballyhaunis. I did not locate any place called Badela.unless it is Ballina. Do you know Catherine's mothers name? There are some RC parishes in Mayo that do not have records back to 1850.

  • Hi Roger

Thanks for poking into this for me. I'm afraid I don't know her mother's name. I suppose it could have been Balina where she was born it could have been transcribed wrongly.

  • Hello, Wendy. Are the birthplaces of Catherine and Patrick taken from a census? Where is Maypoley? Placename search on S. Wilson's website couldn't find a place like it in Mayo. https://www.s.wilson.info

How did you establish a birth year of 1823 for Catherine's father, James?  As you haven't mentioned Catherine's mother's name, I assume you don't know it. A few priests included mothers' names in marriage registers but most didn't.

Have you tried following each Irish-born member of their families on censuses to see what they put as birthplace? Did any of them have obituaries in local newspapers?

If you need other opinions on deciphering a placename try RootsChat forum. It has a section for deciphering handwriting. If you post a deciphering request  there, include Mayo in the post title and that will attract attention of anyone with knowledge of the county as well as handwriting experts.

  • Hi Roger

Yes I had where they were born off the census record's. I don't think I actually found James date of birth it maybe just a guess. No I don't know her mother's name.

I will try roots chat to see if I can find anything like Maypoley.

    Thanks anyway.
