I have been searching for my 3X Great Grandparents (Bernard "Barney" Fitzpatrick and Mary McKarnan) place of birth and family origins. I have plenty of data since they arrived in the US. All I have pre-1825 to go on for that was a letter written to the Boston Pilot Newspaper, published on 29 April 1850 by Mary’s younger sister Sarah. For siblings, Sarah listed: Mary McKarnan, Patrick McKarnan, Catherine McKarnan and Bridget McKarnan, then herself, in that exact order. It states Bernard Fitzpatrick and his wife Mary McKarnan were natives of Killishandra, County Cavan. I believe Mary was originally from Lecharry Townland, Crosserlough Parish, County Cavan. I found an 1821 Census entry for the Mckiernan Family, with the children in that exact order, that has her in Townland Leheresy, House Number 12, but it appears Sarah was born after 1821. I also have no clue as the whether Barney and Mary were married before Barney came to America in 1825.
House Number 12
Patrick McKiernan - Age 35 - Farmer
Mary McKiernan - His Wife - Age 30 - Spinner
James McKiernan - His Son - Age 15 - Labourer
Patrick McKiernan - His Son - Age 6
Mary McKiernan - His Daughter - Age 10
Catherine McKiernan - His Daughter - Age 4
Anne McKiernan - His Daughter - Age 2
Bridget McKiernan - His Daughter - Age is under one year
To be honest, I haven’t had much to go on, but I have put together a thin profile of sorts, assuming they may be related. They all settled in the tiny farming community of Peru, Clinton County, NY with only James moving West before 1850 with the US expansion. They first show up in the 1830 Census and I believe all four may be Brothers. Here is what little I have on the individual men that may be of help:
- James S. Fitzpatrick, b. Oct 10, 1789 County Cavan, Ireland, d. Feb 3, 1883 (age 93) Wisconsin, m. c. 1815-20 Catherine Carson, b. Apr 10, 1797, d. Jun 26, 1881 (age 84).
- Bernard Fitzpatrick, b. 1802 Killashandra, County Cavan, Ireland, d. Jul 17, 1864, m. c. 1830-31 Mary R. McCarnan (McKiernan, McKarnan, McKernon), b. 1812 Parish Kilmore, County Cavan, Ireland, d. Feb 8, 1880, they are buried at St. Patrick’s Cemetery Peru, Clinton County, NY. Barney arrived in US on Ship Sabina Apr 29, 1825, New York Passenger lists 1820-1891, Liverpool to New York alongside Owen Fitzpatrick.
- Philip Fitzpatrick, b. 1804 County Cavan, Ireland, d. Jan 10, 1874 Peru, Clinton County, NY, m. Maria Crowley, b. Mar 17, 1811, d. Jul 24, 1898, they are buried St. Augustine’s Cemetery, Peru, Clinton County, NY. Believe Philip immigrated to the US on the Brig Tivo Marus (Two Mary’s) 20 Apr 1825 from Belfast to NYC.
- Owen Fitzpatrick, b. 1805 County Cavan, Ireland, d. after 1892, m. Catherine Morgan, b. 1805, d. before 1880. Arrived in US on Ship Sabina Apr 29, 1825, New York Passenger lists 1820-1891, Liverpool to New York alongside Barney Fitzpatrick. Naturalization 1841 “native of County Cavan”
I would appreciate any help you can give me. Thank you so much for your time.

Robert:
Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
It will be very difficult to find any additional informations besides the 1821 census record that you located. RC church records for Crosserlough parish start in 1830 for baptisms and 1843 for marriages. Killashandra records start in 1835 for both baptisms and marriages. I also looked at the Tithe listings for 1832 but did not see a Patrick McKiernan and of course Bernard Fitzpatrick had left Ireland.
You may want to add Bernard's emigration story to our XO Chronicles site and possibly someone will see a connection https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-database
Sorry, I could not be more helpful.

Roger,
Thank you so much for having a look. At this point I'm just fishing for tid-bits. I figured the Census information would be problematic, but didn't know about the Baptism and marriage records. Thanks again!

Your Bernard Fitzpatrick would be related to my Bernard.
My Bernard was born 1804 in Annagelliff, Cavan, he died 30 July 1872 in Cavan. My Bernard's parents were, Farrell Fitzpatrick b.1770 Cavan, and Margaret McKenna. Farrell Fitzpatrick was the son of Farrell Fitzpatrick born 1745, who married Mary Carty.
It is possible that one of Farrell Fitzpatrick's children may have also had a son named Bernard.
Farrell Fitzpatrick's other son was Patt Fitzpatrick born 1761, who married Ann Sweeny, they could very well have been the parents of your Bernard. I have not been able to find their children yet, as the records were destroyed.
Perhaps this information may help you. I have them on my Ancestry family tree, called Brenda's tree.

Thank you Brenda, always appreciate a good lead! I haven't worked the line for a bit, so this will give me something to look at.
