Mcilwee or Harland

So I am looking for relatives or anyone who knew my grandfather and family , William Mcilwee Scott, born in Ballymena, Sept 27, 1894 and died October 12, 1978 in San Francisco, CA USA. His birth cert only has the name William Mcilwee; we dont know where the name scott came from as  William's Father in Unknown. 

William's mother was Eliza Mcilwee  was born on March 30, 1868, in Ballymena, Antrim, Northern Ireland, her father, James, was 17, and her mother, Eliza, was 17. She had one son William and one daughter Alice. She had one brother James Mcilwee(1872–1927) Ballymena, Ant, Ireland and died 21 Nov 1872 Wellington, New Zealand  and one sister Alice Mcilwee 23 Feb 1876  died unk. Ballymena, Antrim, Ireland.

William Mcilwee Scott married Susan Harland Jun 1913 • Ballymena, Ireland, Susan was born, 1894, place in Ireland unk. They had two children, William Thomas Scott  ( my dad) July 23, 1927 Chicago, Ill USA, and died August 28, 1994, Concord, CA USA. His sister Alice Elizabeth Scott, born 05/1926 • Chicago, IL died July 3, 2008 • Avon, Livingston, New York. USA.

William moved to USA in the 1940's and became naturalized in USA.

Susan although naturalized American Citizen, remained in Ireland interred December 17, 1977 at Crebilly Cemetery, Ballymena, NO Ireland.

There is more information I can furnish; however I have lots of holes in the history.  I'd love to hear from anyone with information, relatives, or who knew these people.

The family were all born in Co Antrim.

Thomas & Sarah Harland married a week apart. Note that the father Michael was recorded as an army pensioner, so if you search British military records you may find out a little more about him from that.

Thomas's father had been a groom so looking after horses was in the family. Possibly something Michael learned in the army?

If you go through all the Harland births in Ballymena on the irishgenealogy website, from 1876 to 1906 you should be able to get a complete list of all Susan's siblings, and then try and trace them forward. From 1922 onwards you will need the GRONI website for marriages and deaths. That's pay to view.

Can't really help you with William McIlwee Scott's change of name. Presumably it was either his father's surname or perhaps the name of someone his mother married or lived with. There won;lt be any paperwork related to the name change. He'll just have changed it. Have you found him in the 1901 or 1911 censuses? Who was he living with then?
