Hi, am looking for any further info on my great great grandfather Bernard Mceneny/Mcaneny who I believe married Elizabeth McCoubrey in Banbridge in 1851, Bernards father was also called Bernard and both were weavers. My great grandfather was  Thomas McEneny born 1852 also in Banbridge and he married Sarah McCulloughin ( b 1849 in newry ) in 1873 in Seapatrick church ,they moved to England around 1878/9 . Due to the many variations in the spelling of the mceneny surname finding it difficult to find any more information , any help or tips to further my research would be greatly appreciated

  • Here is a transcription of the 1850 (not 1851) civil marriage record for Bernard and Elizabeth. Go to irishgenealogy.ie to see the actual register page.

    22-Apr-1850
    Parish of BANBRIDGE, Co. Down

    Bernard Mcaneny and Elizabeth Mccoubrey
Both lived in Ballymoney and were weavers
    Both were over age 21.
    First marriage for both.
His Father was Bernard Mcaneny, weaver; hers was Thomas Mccoubrey, a labourer

    Witnesses: David Mccormick Mary Madden

  • Bernard & Elizabeth’s marriage in 1850 was in Banbridge Registrar’s office. Probably a mixed denomination marriage. Both came from Ballymoney. That was in the parish of Magherally.

There were no McEnenys nor McCoubreys in Ballymoney in Griffiths Valuation of 1860. The families may have moved by then. Labourers and weavers often moved to follow the available work. They can be hard to trace.

    Thomas & Sarah’s marriage in 1873:

  • Elwyn,

Thanks for the correction; I misread "CHURCH: BANBRIDGE civil."  Question: there's a second marriage record for the couple, which says the parish is Seapatrick.  Do you know why there would be two?  Thanks.

  • Patricia,

I can only see one entry on irishgenealogy and one on GRONI. The April 1850 marriage is dated 21st April, but there is a note beside it to say that the wrong day was written on the certificate, and that the correct date was 22nd April.  If you are seeing 2 entries on rootsireland, could it be that the marriage is in their database twice, with both dates?
