  • Hi Wayne,

A check of Roots Ireland did not show any person name "Mary Thornton" in County Galway - years 1810 to 1820.

There are 6 baptisms, male and female, named Thornton in that period whose mother's name was "Catherine".

Surname: Naughten, Naughton - Kilcummin, Oughterard - Conneely, Fahy, Thornton, Thornton - Galway City, Rahoon.

Many parishes in County Galway do not have birth records for that period.

  • Hi and thanks McCoy,

Thornton may be her married Surname. What I am sure of (because of her convict papers) is that her husband was dead 6 years in 1842, her mother is Catherine and she had two brothers that were soldiers named Ephrain? (Ephraim) and Michael. and that she was on the town for 3 years prior to her being sent to Australia as a Convict 4 Sep 1842.

This has been a brick wall for a while.

    WO 97/535/70

    Michael Thornton

    Born Galway

    Discharged age 39

    1833-1854

    WO 97/904/49

    Edward Thornton

    Born Galway

Served in 30th Foot Regiment, 80th Foot Regiment, 31st Foot Regiment

    Discharged age 41

    1825 - 1848

and another Michael Thornton (but I am thinking the two above may be Mary's brothers)

    Michael Thornton born Killulla Galway

    Served in 97th Foot Regiment

    Discharged age 35

    1804-1818

    If these help

  • Hi Wayne,

The computer shows up detail in the afternoon which it did not in the morning!

Please see the attached, but as there is no detail as to who her mother is, it has to be treated with caution. The address is approx. 4 miles out of town.

    Hi and Thanks McCoy,

Are there records for Michael and Ephraim/Ephrain (Edward) with the same father as this would confirm if John is her Father

This is a snip from Mary's Convict papers in the link I provided above from the Tasmaniam Archives

    Kind Regards,

  • McCoy,

Her Convict papers say she was convicted of stealing Shoes and sealing wax, drunk plus assault (can't quite read some words) all in the Convict record CON15-1-2 Image 87 (87 is page 2) in the link in the first post from the Tasmanian Archives.

    Kind Regards,

    McCoy,

Is there a Michael Thornton and Edward/Ephrain Thornton around the same period? (with Father: John or Mother: Catherine) to see if it looks like this Mary Thornton had 2 brothers with these/similar names. I have put the two possibles in a reply above from the PRO in Kew England  and born Galway.

Source attached is fron the Tasmanian Archives Convict Records, shows her Mother's and her two brothers names and that they were soldiers.

  • Hi Wayne,

I attach two records - 1. for a Michael Thornton whose father is John and the address is the same as Mary's. The only other record that came up was "Catherine" baptised in Rahoon in 1820 and whose mother is shown as "Catherine Walsh". The address is vague and not known to me, but I believe it to be in the Furbo area, based on the Sponsor - Martin Folan.

Roots Web Site is a subscription site where you can log in for short periods.

  • Hi McCoy,

Thanks, so looking like Michael and Mary are brother and sister but Ephraim/Edward is being elusive.

Mary's Convict papers don't mention a Catherine (unless she died).

I checked the subscription for rootsweb and it doesn't show AU$ as an option (I'm in Australia), Thanks again for the information.

  • Hi McCoy,

By the war record above for Edward Thornton, as he was discharged at age 41 and the years listed are 1825 - 1848, this Edward (possibly Ephraim) would have been born about 1807 so is possibly Mary's older brother and was born between 1800-1810 (hence not in the list 1810-1820)

    Kind Regards,

    Wayne
