Hello! I am looking for information on my great-great-great grandmother Mary Mchugh. I am hoping to find where in Ireland she came from and if she had any siblings. I have included all of the information I have below that could help. We believe she may have been from Mayo or Galway but really have no facts to confirm this. There is also a story that her family may have moved to Staffordshire, England before the USA. I have really hit a brick wall looking for anything before she got married in Chicago and would really love any information that can be found!

Mary McHugh Born 15 August,1850/51 Ireland | Death 21 June,1923 Chicago, Illinois

Parents: Thomas McHugh and Mary (from death certificate)

I have Mary's arrival in the USA as 1863 or 1870 per census records.

Husband: Peter G Doyle (1850-1931) Married 21 May 1873 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois

Children: James T (1876-1930), Adele (1883-1956), Catherine M (1882-1955), Edward P (1882-1935), George F (1884), Willie (1887-1888), Loretta M (1889-1939), Russel T (1893-1975), Leo Joseph (1890-1974)

As background, not all RC parishes in Ireland have records back to 1850.

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland using the parents names you provided and the closest lead was a Mary McHugh baptized July 17 1842 in the RC parish of Kilshalvey in Co.Sligo. This family lived in Ballinlack and the mother's name was Mary Killoran which is a surname found in Sligo. I know you indicated 1850-1851 but many immigrants made themselves younger when they arrived in their new country. Very possible that this is a different Mary McHugh.

Have you taken a DNA test which might give you more info on her possible origins from Ireland? You will also get matches and hopefully a 3rd or 4th cousin will match on the McHugh line and the match has more info.

  • Thank you so much for this information Roger! I didn't know that a DNA test would show this type of information. I also didn't know immigrants made themselves younger - this explains some of the different dates in ancestors information. Thank you!
