Hi, My Great Grandparents were Patrick Collins (Born and lived in the Ballinakill/Woodford registration area) and Jane Mulligan (born Summerhill, Meath, but her family moved to Dublin soon after she was born) The 1901 and 1911 Census have Patrick and Jane in Ballygowan/Ballinakill, and the 1911 Census has them married for 18 years, with their first child, John born in June 1893, so that puts their marriage at about 1892. We understand they were both working for the estate of the local landowner John M. A. Lewis when they met - he was a Shepherd and she a nurse.

I have hunted everywhere for a record of their marriage, but have not yet found a record. The East Galway Family History Society in Woodford have no record, I have looked through over a year's worth of the online copies of the parish records and couldn't find anything, and the Parish Priest at the local church at Abbey replied that he had no record.

Any other ideas would be welcome.

Patrick born 1867, parents were Michael Collins and Honor/Hannah Halloran.
Jane born 1871, and her parents were Patrick Mulligan and Jane Enniss

Many thanks

Jan Collins

  • Jan,

I have searched Subscription site www.findmypast.ie and www.rootsireland.ie nationwide for the marriage of Patrick Collins and Jane Mulligan with negative results.

Their son - John - is recorded in the Civil records, but I did not find any record of a baptism for him. His father is recorded as a Herd. Address - Drumnamuckla. Other addresses: Ballygowan and Ballinlough.

Partrick Collins is recorded as a Farmer in some records and a Labourer in another.

A Walter Martyn and a Mary Tuohy are recorded as Baptismal Sponsors for one of the children.

It is possible that Patrick and Jane were married privately and the priest did not record the marriage?

    Regards,

    McCoy
