this person, my 2ggm, is a brick wall of long standing. A census entry of 1901 states that she, if this is the correct person (which I think it is), was born in Co Tipperary: Workhouse occupants form, listed by initial only (# 158, S M, Church of Ireland, can read & write, 70, F, labourer unable, widow, born Co Tipperary, from Birr, condition debility 1 year, in hospital. Could she have been a servant? If that is the case where? The witnesses of her marriage to William Spencer in 1857 were John Sheehan and Robert Loney. I cannot find any other records of Chesnuts in Kilbarron. Can anyone help me with this? her sons were John Spencer & Samuel Spencer. She was not the Margaret (Doolan), 1835-1917... married to another William Spencer

Thankyou, Laurie Addis

  • Hardly any Chesnut people in the area.

On the marriage it says her father was Sandy Chesnut.........cannot find anything on him.

I looked for Spencer people in Offaly, in Griffiths Valuation, a John and a William  (possibly yours) in Shinrone.

  • Thank you Margot and Patricia. I didn't have the burial record, many thanks, it matches her death certificate (and I know my ggf John Spencer, one of many John Spencers, lived in Knockshegowna, his father William died there). I have looked everywhere to find Sandy or Alexander Chesnut, but there is nothing conclusive. Most of the Northern Irish Chesnuts were Presbyterian, whereas the Waterford Chesnuts were Church of Ireland, but I can find no reliable evidence to link any of them. Thanks again,

    Laurie
