Margaret was my great grandmother.  Born 8 December 1844 from Agahdoe parish nearO'Dorney. She is said to have worked as a chambermaid at Muckross House during the visit of Queen Victoria in 1861. We have a jug said to have been given to her that was on the table during that visit. I have had no response to 2 emails to the Librarian at Muckross House asking if they have any archives relating to the names of employees during the Queen's visit. It maybe that the email is no longer operational. Would be grateful for any leads. to verify this story. In 1862 Margaret and her brother John emigrated to New Zealand. In 1865 her parents,James Brosnahan and Annie(Collins) and their 4 daughters,Annie,Catherine,Mary and Ellen emigrated to New Zealand. Margaret married my great grandfather Michael Gaffaney(Gaffney) while Catherine married Michael's brother Francis. I would like to write up this story to include in an online version of a book published last year 'The Gaffaneys of Belper'

  • Hi Gamnha, I am not from or in Kerry but I think Muckross House may be closed for the virus period. However you should try emailing the local library in Kerry, local histroy and archives section here http://www.kerrylibrary.ie/local-history--archives.html

I also see there is a Kerry History Society, it is my finding history society's are not always interested in genealogy but would probably have something on the Royal visit, worth a try https://www.kerryhistory.ie/ if my local society is anything to go by membership giving access to online stuff is not expensive, for me in Louth it is €18 annually which gives you the annual journal for free.

I do not know how to access it but the English are usually very good at recording stuff and you could start with the British Library but that is just guessing.

    Good writing and good luck,

  • Hi Again should say it is also worth looking up Facebook for a Kerry page dealing with either history or genealogy, these pages are usually private and apply to join, I am a member of a few and they are always well moderated, good manners only allowed, for polite people, some would laugh at me now.

    Regards
