Good day, I am trying to find information on Maher’s that left Ireland and moved to Newfoundland (NL) between 1750 & 1830. Does anyone know how I can find this information? My great grandfather was James Maher born 1870 in Greenspond, Newfoundland. His father was Patrick Maher 1825-30 weI believe; he married Mary Reardon from Fogo, NL. I have information on all great grand parent lines except the Maher line. If anyone knows how I can possible trace his roots back to Ireland, it would be great if you could provide that information. There were many Mahers in NL but we have no leads as to who Patrick's parents were or when they moved to NL. Any suggestions would be appreciated!! I look forward to hearing from you!
Patrick had sons William (1859), John (1860), James (1870), Thomas (1872) and daughter Emilia (186?) All born in Greenspond, NL.
In my father's DNA results, it shows we are connected to Waterford.

Dear Newfoundland:
Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board.
My advice would be for you to create an Ancestor Profile for James Maher on the XO Chronicles feature located at the top of this page. It does not matter that you do not know the parish in Tipperary. These profiles are widely read by all our members who search for them by surname and by county in many instances. As a result, it is possible that someone else who is also researching the same family will see your profile and will reply. The link to create an Ancestor profile is https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy
If you have any difficulties, please let me know. In the meantime, I will forward your post to two volunteers who may be able to assist with further guidance.
Kind regards,
Jane

Thank you Jane; your response is much appreciated. I have gone through the Mahers but have not found any information on Mahers who left Ireland for Newfoundland. The only information I have is information pertaining to Mahers in Newfoundland; is it ok to post that here even if the Irish roots have not been identified?

Dear Melanie:
Absolutely! That is no problem at all and the Chronicles will give other members a chance to see if they match up with what information you have shared.
Please get back to me if you have any difficulties.
All the best,
Jane

My mom was from Flattock, Newfoundland, Canada. She was a Maher and a descendant of the Maher's who left Ireland. She would tell us about the fight that happened that made the Maher's flee Tippary, Ireland. Her father's name was Denis Maher and her mother's name was Bridget Burkman Maher. I believe her dad was born around 1889 in Newfoundland. Her brother Joseph Maher was killed in WW2 and we are related to the Maynard's and the Parsons. The grotto in Flattock has a memorial to my uncle Joe. My mom would tell us stories of Newfoundland before it came under British rule. My mom married my dad on Greenland. He was in the Air force. My mom was Helen Maher. She became an American citizen after marrying my dad. I am interested in learning more about my ancestors. I hope this information helps you.
God bless,
Bridget
