I am seeking to identify the parents of Daniel Looney & Elizabeth (Eliza) McCarthy. Daniel was born abt. 1836 in Co. Limerick. He married Eliza 22 Feb. 1859 at Knockaderry, Co. Limerick. He emigrated to Australia 1880 and died at West Kempsey N.S.W.  22 Sept. 1891 I believe his parents were Thomas Looney (1817-1883) and Margaret Danaher (1833-1918) but have no documentation/sources to confirm this.

Elizabeth is believed to have been born abt. 1839/43 in Lisamote Co. Limerick. She died in West Kempsey N.S.W. 18 Nov. 1922. I believe her father was Michael McCarthy (1806-81) Probably also emigrated to NSW. The identity of his wife is tricky with some Ancestry family trees showing her as Betty (or Betsy) Howell and others as Joshua or Johanna Quaid. Once again I have no documents/sources to confirm.

Any info. about  previous generations would also be welcome.

  • Hi, Thomas Looney the father....the death year you have of 1883 this Thomas was a Batchelor.

    Townland names changed over the years that's why you search with a map from one set of records to another. It is hard when you first start.
    I checked Knockaderry for the marriage in 1859 it is between two Parishes.

    On RootsIreland (paid subscription), Daniel's marriage record shows he is from Adare. I did not find a record for him but found five children born in Adare, Limerick to Thomas Looney and Margaret Danaher- Maria 1832, John 1834, Catherine 1837, Thomas 1839, and Helen 1842. The dates you have for Margaret Danaher don't work with the birth of her children.

    You probably already have, on Ancestry, Daniel's Australian Death Index Record shows Margaret and Thomas as parents. The 1880 ship record identifies he has a brother James already living in Australia.
