Patrick and Mary Toohey, with their son Joseph b. 1836 left Ireland for the United States in time to be there for the 1860 US Census in Ohio. DNA and surname research are leading me to look in Galway for some sign of them before they left.
Can you point me in the right direction?
Thanks!

Juli:
A number of the RC parishes in Co. Galway do not have baptismal records back to 1836. I did search on the subscription site Roots Ireland for a baptismal record for Joseph but there were no Galway records for Joseph with father Patrick.
One question. Did the Toohey/Tuohey family leave Ireland after 1855 but before 1860 as you indicated? What I'm looking to determine is wheter Patrick Tuohey/Toohey was included in the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Co.Galway. Almost all of the Patrick Tuohey/Toohey records in the Griffiths are from Ballynakill civil parish in southeast Co. Galway.

Hi Roger, and thanks for helping with my question!
I am able to place Patrick, Mary, Joseph, Anna, and John "Toohy" in Ohio in the 1860 US Census for Green Township, Clinton County, Ohio, here:
https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/7667/images/4282494_00…
This record gives us:
Patrick, 50, b. 1810, Birthplace: Ireland
Mary, 45, b. 1815, Birthplace: Ireland
Joseph, 22, b. 1838, Birthplace Ireland
Anne, 20, b. 1840, Birthplace: Ohio
John, 17, b. 1843, Birthplace: OhioBut other census records do not agree and show Anne and John both born in Ireland.
https://www.myheritage.com/research/record-10128-65101586/joseph-toohey…
The 1870 US Census for Penn Township, Highland County, Ohio, (Right across the county line from the 1860 census location) gives us this:
Patrick Toohey, 61, Birthplace: Ireland
Mary, 59, Birthplace: Ireland
Joseph, 32, Birthplace: Ireland
Anna, 30, Birthplace: Ireland
John, 25, Birthplace: IrelandIn the 1880 US Census, the birthplace for both Patrick and Mary, and their daughter Anna, is listed as "Conner, Ireland." Same for their parents.
Then, in the 1900 US Census, it says that Joseph had been in the US 50 years, and his Immigration Year is 1850.
Does any of that help?
Thanks again,
Juli

Juli:
The information is inconclusive. The 50 years in 1900 was likely a guestimate. I would still consider Ballynakill parish in southeast Galway as a lead. By the way, there are actually four Ballynakill civil parishes in Galway. One in the west of Galway, two in the northeast corner and the one I mentioned in southeast Galway.
Conner Ireland does not make any sense to me.

Just happened across your post, Juli. I'm a searcher also and hope this doesn't confuse things but I recognized the name. I have a Patrick Tohey as a sponsor in the 1855 baptism of my great grand aunt Mary Grady in Abbeyknockmoy Parish in Galway. Maybe our Roscommon volunteer Roger can check Griffiths for that parish? Good luck!

Hi Patricia, I hope so! I have since found what I believe is the gravestone of Patrick's wife Mary:
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/165298396/mary-tuohy
Which spells the last name T-U-O-H-Y and says she was from Coos(e), County Galway, which I think takes us back to Ballynakill, the one in Leitrim. (There had to be four?)
I don't really understand what I'm seeing in Griffith's yet, but there are several Patrick Tuohy listings in Coos North in 1856, and at least one in Coos South. Maybe that will place him there or eliminate him from there and move things on to Abbeyknockmoy.
Thanks for writing. ~Juli
