  • Hi Nyder5

I have been unable to find a Marriage record. The earliest birth is Catherine in 1875, Newcastle Galway is the address listed.

According to the 1911 census there were 7 surviving children of Thomas Ward and Catherine Little.

Appears from online records that 4 siblings had already married in Boston, Elizabeth was back in Ireland on Census date. Richard Ward remained in Ireland, did not marry. As Bridget Ward was 44 at the time of her brother’s death, it’s unlikely she married.

Thomas Ward Jnr born in 1877, died in 1878. Helena born in 1886, died in 1886. The six surviving siblings that I can identify are John, Michael, Maria, Elizabeth, Richard and Bridget. Are you aware of another sibling who may have emigrated to Boston?

  • Gerard,

What a surprise to receive your email!  Thank you very much for the information provided.

What a learning experience this has been.  Looking at the 1901 census it looks like the last name was spelled Warde as opposed to Ward.  I did find them on 12 West New Street, Galway in 1901.  On the 1911 census, looks like they just moved across the street to number 13 West New Street, Galway and added a piggery to boot!  I am a little confused about the age listings for Thomas and Catherine.  I am thinking people may not have known how old they were since I've read that birthdays were seldon celebrated.

I do have the same children as you plus another girl named Kate.  This will explain the birth in 1875 and the death in 1914.  This would have been the daughter.

Since the changes in the ages on the two census for Thomas and Catherine are differant, I am not confident on when they were born.  The census was 10 years apart but the indicated age changes that they indicated were 22 years.

I also learned that Delia is another name for Bridget.

I have visited West New Street about 10 years ago.  I would like to find out the parents of Thomas and Catherine Ward.  Her maiden name was either Little or Leetle or Lyttle.  I have seen it spelled three differant was.  I believe that both my Great Grand Parents never came to America.  My grand mother Maria did come her and died in 1946.

Do you know how I would find Thomas and Catherine's birth records or death records? They were in Pahoon Parish but not sure what church they may have gone to.

    Again, thank you for responding.

    Hi Linda

I have already given you Catherine Little Ward death record with Son Richard Present in 1914. Catherine aged 57 on death record, born about 1857 so would have been about 18 when daughter Kate was born in 1875.

Would genarally rely on 1901 ages declared. In January 1909 pensions were introduced in Ireland. As Civil Registration of Births etc only commenced in 1864 the Government had to rely on Census returns to confirm eligibility !!  Hense ages declared were inflated in 1911 !!.

Am attaching a word doc with records gleamed online.

    Regards
