My name is Lisa Dougherty, I am a professional genealogist in upstate New York doing a project for a client.  My client's ancestor, a man named Arthur Gardiner, was a resident of Albany, NY from around 1883-1896.  I strongly suspect he was a native of Borris-in-Ossory, Queen's County.  In 1892, he inherited a piece of property in Ireland, which was then sold on his behalf by his attorney, David C. Fitzgerald.  The property was described as an estate of 870 acres in King's County, and included were the townlands of Derryclough, Charleville and Caherview.  The ad below appeared in The Freeman's Journal and National Express on 12 September 1892.  I am trying to identify the whereabouts of these townlands.  I know there is a "Charleville Demesne" in Offaly, associated with Charleville Castle.  The ad below and others in different newspapers in both Ireland and New York give the impression that the estate was in one place, and these townlands were close together.  I can find nowhere in County Offaly that fits this description.  

 

Another thought was the Charleville that is located in County Laois.  Arthur Gardiner was born around 1850 and was possibly the son of John Stoker Gardiner and Elizabeth Collins.  John was a shopkeeper in Borris-in-Ossory.

 

Arthur Gardiner died in 1896 in Albany, NY and his wife traveled to Ireland to settle his estate.  A will calendar entry from that time says Arthur was "Of Borris-in-Ossory". 

 

I wondered if anyone would have any local insight into place names that might be helpful.  None of the maps or finding aids I'm using are giving me any clues.  (https://www.swilson.info/,  https://www.logainm.ie/en/, https://webapps.geohive.ie/mapviewer/index.html, Ask About Ireland, etc)

    I feel it is fine for Lisa to ask IrelandXO for help identifying townlands that she has not been able to identify herself in her detailed  client research.  She is not requesting free research into any individuals, or any extensive research.  She's just asking for the location of some townlands.

    Like Patricia, I think it is OK to ask for guidance. However, I would say that it is best to keep the discussion on the message board. That way, there will be a record of it and also the results may be valuable to others. 

    In addition to the sources you mention, I use Seanruad (https://thecore.com/seanruad/) for townland searches and townlands.ie. There is Charleville Demesne in King's County (just outside Tullamore; be careful as there is a townland in Wicklow with the same name), but I couldn't find Derryclough or Caherview. These could be local placenames that were not incorporated as townlands, but were still in use at that time. The Tithe Applotment Books have some old placenames so you could do a search there. The Griffith Valuation House and Field books at this link https://census.nationalarchives.ie/search/vob/index.jsp are another possibility. As you say, from the ad I think they are close together. There may be some local knowledge on this. Tullamore Historical Society may be some help with that.

    What was the name of the person who owned the property that Arthur inherited?

     I am not a professional genealogist....................... what year was this Arthur Gardiner born?
    What year did he go to the USA?
