I'm trying to trace my maternal grandmothers line -Her name was Birdie May Guinane Savage- b 1885 in Toronto, d 1966 Toronto-
Her Dad was James Guinane b 1865 Toronto, d 1910 Toronto
His dad was John Guinane b around 1818 Roscrea. Died March 4 1894 in Ontario Canada. His wife was Catherine Smith also from Ireland.
They married on Feb 1 1841 at St Pauls church in York, Ontario. I don't know when they immigrated to Canada, whether they came together or met in Canada.
John's father I believe was James Guinane b 1795 in Roscrea.
His dad, Patrick, b in March 1772 in Limerick, married in Offaly in 1790
His dad Maurice Ginane b 1750 or so in Limerick.
I'm rather unsure of Patrick and Maurice and have found records of both James and John as interchangable names for the male born in 1795 so I may be off on those too .
I'd love to know more about any/all of these folks, have some great great etc grandmothers names, marriage dates and places etc to add to my tree.
Any information or helps that you might share with me would be much appreciated-
Sincerely
Deirdre Greene Williams

Dear Deirdre:
Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site!
I will pass your query onto one of our Roscrea volunteers who may be able to assist you. The Guinan family were located in Roscrea, Silvermines and Killanule areas of Tipperary.
Please give our volunteers a week or two to reply.
Many thanks for your interest in IReland Reaching Out and the very best of luck with your research.
You might consider creating an Ancestor Profile for one of the Guinans for the XO Chronicles (tab located at the top of the page). These profiles are widely read by all our members, updated weekly and can often lead to further information from others searching the same family.
All the best,
Jane.

Hi Deirdre . . . Greetings from Roscrea, Co.Tipperary, Ireland . . .
So . . . you pose a serious challange . . to adding substance to your family search . . .
The first problem . . is the stretch back in dates . . . which are a time before Irish records . . .
R.C. Church Parish Records ( Roscrea ) . . earliest entries are 1810 . . . see . . . https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0805
I searched " Ancestry " for the earlier Limerick connections . . Maurice Ginane c.1750 . . also spelling Giunane . . also Guinan
I did find a PATRICK Ginane being baptised . . . 1772 . . . ( see below ) . . original entry in Limerick Church ?? Father MAURICE . . Mother . . Margta Crawby
of PATRICK's marriage in Offaly ( a.k.a. Kings County ) . . . I found NO positive trace . . .
__________________________________________________
The Surname - spelling . . Guinan . . . appears from my search. . . to be more common to . . . the County in Ireland
known as Offaly (nowadays) . . . or (aka) Kings County . . .
_____________________________________________________________
Roscrea In Co. Tipperary. . . the Town is geographically situated . . . within a mile of two neighbouring County boundries
. . . namely Kings Co. . . . and Laoise ( aka ) Queens County.
This makes for a great confusion when searching . . especially if the search family were in Farming Lands . . .
BUT . . there are some clues available . . .
We still have records from 1823 - 1837 . . known as " Tithes Applotment " . . . wherein is recorded Guinan;s for the Roscrea area . . . ( see Guinan search # 1 . . below )
Also ( see #2 ) . . . the last two Guinan names are within a few miles of Roscrea . . .
____________________________________________________
Then . . . there are records . . . known as " Griffiths Valuation " 1847 - 1864 . . . ( see #3. )
and - - in #4. below . . . you will see the name GUINANE . . . all in close proximity to the Town and surroundigs of Roscrea.
___________________________________________________________
Again . . .I refer you back to the R.C. Church records of Roscrea . . beginning 1810
you will find these at this site online. . . .https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0805
with luck . . and patients. . . you may find your ancestors Baptism record . . in a spread . . say . . 1817 to 1822 . .
For want of information . . I failed to find any trace of a Catherine Smith . . .
_______________________________________________________
and then the story leads to Canada . . . where . . I presume you already have most of the records . . .
___________________________________________________
I do hope . . some of the above will be of some use to you . . .
Should you have a specific question . . . I would be glad to assist . . .

Cheers . . . Eamonn M. Horan ( I.R.O.)
