I'm looking for any possible information about my ggg grandmother Ellen F. O'Conner she was born abt 1827-28 in Tipperary. I'm not sure which parish, her death record and obituary say she was a native of County Tipperary. Her death record states she was 68 years and 7 months...she died September 17, 1896. In one census 1870 a Anna Conners is living with Ellen and husband John Welch...which I believe may be her niece. Not sure when she emigrated, but she married John Welch in 1848 in Salem, MA.

I know this sounds a little bizzare, but I had a dream about a month ago...I saw a piece of paper with the name Nenagh on it, but couldn't see the name of the person. Sorry sounds weird..I know. I believe Nenagh is in Tipperary, before my dream never heard of it.

My family and I will be in Tipperary in about a week to visit The Rock of Cashel and The Vee. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Best Regards,

Shelly Blair

Did Ellen have children & if so do you know their names? I couldn't find any but IF they followed the irish naming pattern we might be able to work out which of the parents in the baptisms above are Ellen's

  • Hello,

Yes, Ellen had Three sons- Francis Mathew Welch, William Joseph Welch...my gg grandfather and James Owen Welch. I did find in the 1870 census in California that an Anna Conners was living with John and Ellen, she was 9 years old born in Massachusetts. I looked Anna Conners up on Ancestry and found a possible father Michael Conners.

The names that keep repeating in my family are John, William and James...my grandfather was John, grand uncle William Francis, grand uncle James, great grandfather William Joseph and my uncle is John and cousin James.

Thank you so much for all your help. I really appreciate it.

  • I guess you're on your trip by now Shelley - enjoy it!

    The Irish naming pattern:

1st son after father's father; 1st daughter after mother's mother

2nd son after mother's father; 2nd dtr after father's mother

3rd son after father; 3rd dtr after mother; 3rd dtr after mother

4th son after father's oldest brother; 4th dtr after mother's oldest sister

So the Ellena record with father William - second son named after mother's father would fit?

  • Hi there,

    Leaving tomorrow. :)

That's good to know. Is Clonmel the townland? I wander what was the mother's maiden name. I have a DNA match on Ancestry with the surname Dunn that has O'Connor/Conners on her family tree, but we haven't been able to figure out our connection yet.

Thank you for all your help. Greatly appreciate it!
