My great great grandfather, Patrick Shields was a shoemaker in Galway in 1845 when he stole a horse from Patrick (Devon?) He was convicted in County Galway on 18 March 1845 and was transported Ratcliffe (1) from London as a convict to Van Diemen's Land sentenced to 10 years.

He was single, Catholic, illiterate, 23 yrs of age in 1845 so approx birth date of 1822 with a club right foot and described as a cripple.

He gave his native place as Galway. He made no reference to any family.

I am keen to know if there are records of trades at the time which might identify where he was working in Galway as a shoemaker.

Church records for Baptism?

Were the Court records destroyed by fire or do they still exist for that time and if so are they online? Which Galway newspaper of  March1845 may have reported the trial?

I have no more detail about exactly where in Galway he was from.

Any help anyone can provide, I would much appreciate,

Christine.

  • https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/233618102/patrick-shields   Is  this your Patrick ? The man in the picture has a clubbed foot on his right leg. Note the DOB is 1814, it was not unusual for people of that time to not know their exact birthday so keep this in mind when researching  Patrick.

  • Christine,

On the paid site Roots Ireland, there is a Patrick Shiel born on 24 Apr 1815 to Brian Shiel and Judith Shiel in the RC parish of Tuam, Galway. Denomination - Roman Catholic. One of the baptism sponsors was Patrick Shiel. Unknown whether Shiel was Judith's maiden name or whether her married name was recorded.

There are two Ancestry trees that have "Judy" for Patrick's mother, but no record to prove it; so it could be this name was passed down via family lore...there is no way to determine unless the person who created the tree is contacted.

This 1815 birth date concurs better with his death record than an 1822 birth date.

    Regards,

  • Thank You Carolyn. In his convict records, Patrick Shields age is 23 in 1845 making his birth date 1822, not 1814 or 1815 as claimed elsewhere. It would make his age when he died 89 instead of 98 as newspapers of the day reported.

However, if he was 30years when he arrived then it all adds up.

Are there any records for a  Patrick Shields/Shiels birth in 1822?

Are there records of shoemakers in Galway in 1845?

    So many loose ends,

    Cheers

    Christine

  • Chistine,

I found another record for a Patrick Shiel born in 1827, but I think that would make him too young, 18, to have had a tradesman job as a shoemaker. The parents in that record are John Shiel and Susanna Sullivan, the RC parish is Woodford and BD is 14 May 1827. It was not at all uncommon for people not to know their birth dates in the mid 19th century.

The 1815 record might not be your relation because only 15 of the around 78 RC parishes in all of Galway have baptismal records dating back to the 1820 or before.

I did not find any information regarding shoemakers in Galway during that time period.

    Regards,
