Simple question from someone out-of-the-area:
Is Kilmacthomas the name of a town in Waterford? or a parish? Was it an old area (1860-1872 ish) that has changed it's name?
THANK YOU!!

Kilmacthomas is the name of a town in Ballylaneen civil parish in mid County Waterford, but like many other placenames the same name was used for other land divisions - in this case a civil registration district, and a Poor Law Union both based in in the town.. see the entry for the town of Kilmacthomas in Lewis' 1837 Topographical Dictionary, and the map extract below.
The town is still there and still goes by the same name...

Thank you for the wonderful and quick reply!!
Seems my g-g-grandparents had children in Kilrossanty but one was baptized in Kilmacthomas. Since Kilmacthomas is not a parish listing, it caused confusion in my limited understanding of some Irish geographical divisions. The map is a big help!
Thanks!

The locations given on Catholic baptisms are usually the residence of the family at the time.
The parish of Kilrossanty was one of several surrounding the town of Kilmacthomas - in the mid 1800s the parish had several chapels, one at Killnagrange, Fews a short distance north west of Kilmacthomas and an old and new chapel at Boolatin townland in Kilrossanty. (both Fews and Kilrossanty are shown on that map..)

Thank you again! More research and review ahead!
We know one of those Powers kids (John Joseph) married Norah Leahy of Rossmore/Newcastle/Tipperary. They met in Ireland in 1880s.....and planned a NY marriage at St. Patricks Cathedral. Family lore is that John's elder brother, Richard, took his passage and came to America first while John stayed to earn more and finally went to his fiance in 1898- married in the new cathedral on Fifth Avenue.
Trying to prove the family lore by info...........like how they might have met in the 1880s......
Her family was in Newcastle, Tipperary..........Mom was Johanna Kelleher/Keliher and Dad was James Leahy. Through one of the Ireland XO Reaching Out volunteers (Tom Hussey) we saw their home and church in 2016. Would love to find how Norah and John met during those 1880s- 1890s.........both had several siblings who also came to New York. I wonder if they had siblings who remained.....
Thanks for the information and map- and the motivation to review my POWERS binder of papers!
My best,
Ann Marie Bridget Lynch
