Looking for information on Margaret M O'Halloran (born Corr) born Nov 24 1823  Kilkenny, Ireland. She was married to John Sylvester O'Halloran (Died 1894). They had an impressive 11 children. One being William Richard Kore O'Halloran 1887-1949 born in Cork died in Trinidad and Tobago.

I am looking for any information on Margaret or her husband John Sylvester as my searches have hit a wall at these two.

  • Simon:

The subscription site Roots Ireland has baptismal and civil birth records for ten children from 1853-1870. The first record in 1853 was for Emily and the last in 1870 was for Henrietta. I don't see a William. Was he really born in 1887? Another anomaly is the 1840 marriage and the first child in 1853. Maybe there were older children but records are not available?

Looks like the family lived in Tipperary near the border with Waterford and in fact the RC parish was Powerstown which I believe is located in Waterford.

  • Simon,

There is a baptism record on the subscription site Roots Ireland for Margaret Corr...24 Nov 1823, Green St. is the residence, RC parish of Callan, Co. Kilkenny. Her parents are James Corr and Elizabeth Kehoe. Sponsors are Patrick Kehoe and Ellen Walsh.

One of their children referenced above was Richard O'Halloran born 5 Aug 1855, Powerstown Parish, Co. Tipperary...maybe your William Richard.

The other children were all born in Powerstown as well... some show Co. Tipperary with duplicate records in Co. Waterford for some of them.

The baptism records for Powerstown parish begin in 1808.   I agree with Roger that a birth for William Richard in Cork does not make sense for this family as Margaret would have been 64 years old at his birth.

I checked this family on Ancestry, and there are conflicting family trees with both William Richard and Richard on them there which are not supported by records.

    Regards,

    Carolyn

  • Simon,

In relation to the marriage of John O'Halaran to Margaret Corr in Callan in 1840, one of the Witnesses was a Samuel Bushel.

Attached record shows the marriage of a Samuel Bushel to Biddy Halaran in Drangan on February 4th 1841. Her address is possibly Kilnagranagh in the Poor Law Union of Callan/Cashel.

Could this be the family you are seeking?

  • Simon,

Please see attached report in the County Clare Journal dated February 15th 1841 in relation to Samuel Corbet Bushel.

Apparently he left for the USA and was involved with the Abbey Theatre in Dublin.

His wife's father is recorded as James.

  • Thank you everyone for the amazing replies! Carolyn, you may be right about the Cork birth place. I am trying to root out the errors. I don't have a birth date for John Sylvester just a death year, nor a death date for Margaret Corr. My family tree search basically stops at these two (now thankfully adding the Parents of Margaret) so my information is a bit space.

Thanks again everyone, the response has been fantastic!

  • Simon,

In the civil records on the free site irishgenealogy.ie, there are death records for both John and Margaret.

John: 12 Mar 1895, Killenaule, married, 78 years, gentleman farmer, wife Margaret present at death.

Margaret: 27 Jun 1900, place looks like "Grawn", widow, 76 years, son George present at death

  • Simon,

I forgot to add, this couple had 14 children...born between 1844 and 1870. All the births are documented by parish bapstism records on an Ancestry tree. If you don't have access, I can provide the information, just let me know.

  • Thank you so much Carolyn!

14 children!? wow thats incredible. I am short by 2 then as I only have 12 listed for their family. I do not have access sadly, My tree is being built on Myheritage (I do have a small free account on ancestry ) If you don't mind it would be great if you could provide the info you have from there. Everybody's assistance is opening up a lot of avenues and filling in many gaps.

    Thanks again,

    Simon

  • Simon,

Here you go...all children have parish baptism records with the exception of Catherine, but her marriage record confirms her in the family...I'll explain when I come to her:

Margaret 2 Jun 1844, Donegal, New Inn & Knockgraffon, Tipperary, Cashel & Emly Diocese

James 19 Apr 1846,       ditto above info.

John Richard 28 Mar 1852  ditto above info.

Emily 18 Dec 1853, Powerstown, Tipperary, Waterford/Lismore Diocese

Catherine no birth record found, but her marriage record in 1879 shows her residence as Grawn House Fethard, and her father was John O'Halloran, gentleman farmer. This Grawn House must be where her mother died as I referenced above.

Richard 5 Aug 1855, Powerstown, Tipperary, Waterford/Lismore Diocese

Agnes Eva 1 Oct 1857   ditto above info

Loughlin Bernard 11 Nov 1858  ditto above info

George 12 April 1860   ditto above info

Henry Peter 11 Jul 1861 ditto above info

Anne Lucy 16 Jul 1863 ditto above info

    Charles Walter 13 Sep 1864 Tullamain, Tipperary/Waterford

Eileen Bridget Mary 21 Mar 1866 Tullamain, Tipperary/Waterford

Henrietta Alice 2 Aug 1870 Powerstown, Tipperary, Waterford/Lismore Diocese

Let me know if you'd like more information...looks like a few siblings emigrated to the US and at least one to Australia.

    Regards,

  • Simon,

Additionally, the Ancestry tree where the above information came from is the Keogh family tree...that is Margaret Corr's mother, Elizabeth Kehoe. The tree goes back a number of generations to someone named MacMaolmure MacKehoe in 1570.  There are no records though, so maybe the person who built the tree knows the family history.

It looks like the Keogh (Kehoe) were originally from County Carlow.

    Carolyn
