I am seeking informiaton on the John Phillips (born 1845) and Bridget Conneely (born 1845) families whom I belive would have been from the Cong area or close by.  John was also a farmer in Ireland.

John and Bridget had 5 children:

Mary born 1864 - moved to Pittsburgh and married Michael Ward - not sure when she died

Julia born 1867 came to the US, married Bernard Burns, lived in McKeesport, Pa and died 1913

Bridget (Delia)- born 1868  emmigrated to the US, worked as a servant in West Virginia at the age of 14 and married Anthony Truel in Pittsburgh, Pa. where she lived until her death in 1942.     This is my great-grandmother.

Cahternine Phillios born 1868 moved to Pittsburgh, married Martin O'Toole and died 1935 in Pittsburgh area.

Pattrick Phillips born in Ireland and is believed to have come to the US and returned to Ireland- I dont have any other information about him however, it is belived that he returned to Cong area.  Any informaiton on Patrick would be helpful.

John Phillips is belived to have died in Pennsylvania and his wife Bridget Conneely Phillips is found on the June 10, 1880 census (age 35) living as a widow with her widowed sister-in-law (Sarah Phillips age 45) and Sarah's son's John aged 14 on High Street. Nothing more on Bridget Conneely Phillips can be found in the US. She is rumored to have returned to Ireland where she would have lived with or near her son Patrick and possibly remarried.

Any information on Bridget Conneely Phillips and her son Patrick Phillips would be of great help.

I am also interested in learning about John Philips origins as well as possible parents and siblings for Bridget Conneely and John Phillips. I know that John had at least one brother but unable to detrmine his first name. His son was named John.

Sincerely,

Judy

  • Hello again Judy!

Take a look at this 1901 census reocrd which has a 70 year old Bridget with a daughter in law Catherine and a grandson John. The husband of Catherine was not in the household when the census was taken. They lived in Kiltogorra townland Cong civil parish  http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Mayo/Cong/Kiltogorra/1577348/

Here is the civil birth record for John Phillips in 1897 (fifth record on page) https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1897/02124/1807294.pdf

The father is shown as Patrick Phillips. Likely young John was named after his paternal grandfather.

I know that you have Bridget Conneely born in 1845 but I believe this is your family.

Bridget died in 1905  (fourth record on page) and she was shown as 60 https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1905/05599/4573897.pdf  which ties back to 1845.

Here is the 1911 census for Kate Phillips and a four year old daughter Bridget http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Mayo/Cong/Kiltogorra/705067/  Once again Patrick was not in the household. John the son was deceased.

I found his death record also in 1905. He died from burns (third record on page)  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1905/05591/4571059.pdf

  • Judy:

Patrick Phillips died in 1952. (second record on page)  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1952/04490/4178889.pdf   His daughter Bridget was the informant. I did not find a death record for Catherine/Kate.

  • Wow! I can't thank you enough for the information. My family was unable to find anything about Patrick or his mother Bridget. Bridget was born Conneely. Would there be records to determine her marriage to John Phillips? I am hoping that those records might give an indication about hers and John's parents. So it looks like Bridget never remarried and that by th time Patrick Phillips died, his wife, Catherine was already dead.

One question, it looks like Catherine reports being age 40 Twice- once with her son Patrick and no daughter mentioned and then again later, after Patrick died and when her daughter is about 4. Could this just be a misprint?

Again, thank you so much for your help!

  • Judy:

Right, Catherine or Kate reported age 40 on both the 1901 and 1911 censuses. People were not as concerned about accuracy of age reporting. So you see all sorts of anomalies with ages in the two censues. Sometime people age 20 years between 1901 and 1911.

I did not find the marriage record. They married right before civil registration began in 1864 and presumably the church no longer has records available in the early 1860s.

  • Roger,

Are more current documents in Ireland available online? I am just wondering about Bridget Phillips (Patrick and Catherine's daughter).  When might she have died and did she have children / grandchildren and wondering if they would still be in the same area?   It just dawned on me that some of Patrick's descendants might still be in Ireland.   How would I begin looking for those records? In the US, census, bitch and death records are not available online for sometime after the fact. I think census is 50 years after the fact. Not sure about our birth and death certificates for current.       Thanks for any information you are able to share.

On the 1952 death record for Patrick, Bridget was the informant and she was listed as Bridget Phillips which indicates she was not married at that time when she was about 46. We only have access to marriage records up to 1944 and death records to 1969. Ireland has privacy restrictions on records: 100 years for births, 75 years for marriages and 50 years for deaths.

My guess is that Bridget never married.

By the way, the surname Phillips in Co. Mayo is almost exclusively found in East Mayo in a civil parish called Kilbeagh which is the home parish for my McDonnells. My great-grandfather Rodger McDonnell married Ellen Phillips.

  • Wonder if Ellen had a brother, John?  I had something that showed John as a farmer and one of the children born in Kiltogarra - sorry for butchering the spelling. I supposed Kiltogarra is in Cong as well.
you don't have an Anna McDonald/ McDonnell born 1864- came to the US IN 1883 and married Michael Walsh do ya? She is the reason I started my search and she has remained an enigma. No church records here other than her children's birth, her death etc. They only mention her as being from Ireland.she died at age 37 in 1901.
Since we don't know what part of Ireland she was born, do you have any recommendations for how I might try to track her down?  Anna McDonald is like most of my family, very common name.
