I am still searching for information about John O'Brien born about 1838 probably in Waterford County Ireland. He married Catherine Kirwin on Jan 18th, 1859 by Rev Cahill in the Church of Clonea, parish of Clonea in the Diocese of Waterford & Lismore and was listed as John Brien. His death certificate in 1908 in the US lists his parents as John and Mary O'Brien both born in Ireland but I have no further information on them. I would appreciate anyone who might be able to access records to give any information on his parents and if he had any brothers or sisters. He emigrated from Ireland in 1869 with his 4 sons: John, Patrick, Edward and Martin to settle in Pittstown, NY as farmers. Any info would be greatfully appreciated. Thanks.

Kevin O'Brien

    Hi Kevin,

I found some information for you about the marriage and the children that I have attached. Since John O'Brien was a labourer he would normally have moved around quite a bit in his work for different farmers, so it is difficult to know if the Stadbally Kilmacthomas area was the place where he was raised. It might be. You can see the marriage date was the15th  and the celebrant was not Cahill. In fact, Daniel Cahill also shows up as a sponsor at a child's birth.

There are four pages on Roots Ireland (a site you have to pay for) that have Johns born to a John O'Brien married to different Marys in county Waterford in that time period. No way to tell if any of them are yours.

I suggest you do some sleuthing on the tithe applotments and Griffith's valuation in that area for the time period because  his parents may have paid tithes while he probably did not. Also if you could find out his mother's maiden name that would help a lot.

    Good luck
