John Hayes migrated from Galway to Australia c1855. Born c1827.
I respectfully seek any assistance to identify his home town prior to emigration or any information that may identify his parents or family in Ireland. Thank you. Further details below.
The most likely shipping information that I can find is for a Jno Hayes migrating on the vessel "Sultana" departing Liverpool on 15 Sep 1854 and arriving Melbourne, Australia on 13 December 1854. Described as a 23 year old labourer from Ireland.
It looks like he visited Ireland c1889. According to John Hayes' Obituary (The Woodend Star 18 Sep 1909) "...20 years ago he visited Ireland and South Africa..." The obituary further states that he arrived in Victoria in 1855.
John Hayes allegedly married Bridget Fogarty (or Hogarty) in September 1857 at St Mary's Catholic Church in Sep 1857. There is no civil or church record of this.
First child: Catherine born 1858. No records found.
Second child: Patrick born 4 Apr 1860. Birth registerd with details as above.
Third child: Hannah/Hanora born 1862. Birth registered.
Fourth child: John Thomas born 29 Feb 1864 (BDM Victoria 12438/1864). On this birth record, John Hayes is described as a 34 year old labourer from Galway, Ireland. It records that he married Bridget Fogarty in Sep 1857 at Castlemaine, Victoria. The earlier three children are listed.
John Hayes followed gold to Woodend Victoria in 1855.
Bridget died in labour in 1867.
John worked the gold rushes and then worked for the Woodend Shire as a dayman.
He drowned in Dandenong Creek, Dandenong, Melbourne, Victoria on 12 Sep 1909 (BDM Victoria 1194/1909)
On his death certificate he is described as 82 years old and living in the Australian colonies for 54 years. All four children are listed.
It says that he married Bridget Fogarty in Ireland. (Unlikely to be true as Bridget Fogarty arrived as an 18 year old on the vessel Omega in 1854 with her three older sisters).
I would appreciate any help that someone might be able to provide. I am new to any research in Ireland and am not sure where to start.
Greetings from Australia and many thanks.

Monica, The surname "Hayes" is quite common in East County Galway. In the area from Ballinasloe to Gort there are 33 records in Griffith's House and Land Valuations in the 1850's. The surname "Fogarty" has 28. You will find those records on free site www.askaboutireland.ie/Griffith's Go to "Family Names" and when the sheet comes up, click on "Details" This will give you the location of the person, including the Barony, Parish and Townland. John Hayes named his first son as "Patrick". Based on the Irish naming pattern, it is likely his father was named Patrick. It is also possible that "Catherine" was called after his mother! Do you have a death record for Bridget Fogarty? Best Wishes,
McCoy
