John Dwyer was born in 1833 to Daniel Dwyer and Johanna Dwyer nee O’Sullivan  in Boherlahan, Ireland.

We know he had 3 sisters Johanna, Nora and Mary all of whom stayed in Ireland.  He gave their address as Boherlahan.

At a guess I would imagine that his family would be buried in the grounds of the Catholic Church in Boherlahan as he left money to the parish priest to say Masses for his family and friends.

John and his wife Catherine (Kate) had a group of very close family and friends all of whom had come from Ireland.  These included the Morrissys, Hassetts and O’Deas as well as Kate’s 2 brothers.  John was 50 at the time of his marriage.

John Dwyer came to Australia at he age of 25 in 1858, probably looking for gold.  He was a grazier when he died in Wahring on 16th April1901 in the State of Victoria.  He was buried at the Nagambie Cemetery in Victoria.

  • Hi Jan,

Was wondering if you and your husband made any progress on the land records related to the Dwyers during your August visit to Dualla? I was also there in September and in line with the circa 1850 Griffith's Valuation, believe my ancestor Thomas Dwyer occupied a 3 acre land parcel behind the tree line at the back of the present day Dualla RC church. I think his father was a Patrick Dwyer Sr who had land parcels across the road from the church front where the modern day housing development is located. Thoughts?
