I am looking for my 2nd great Grandfather. He was born in Roscommon in 1823 to a John and Mary Craven.  He immigrated to the US and settled in New Orleans before 1848.  His mother Mary and brother Laurence and Daniel also came over to the US.

  • Mary Lou:

Many Co. Roscommon RC parishes do not have baptismal records back to 1823. I did search the subscription site Roots Ireland and there is a June 4 1819 baptismal record for a John Craven with father John and mother Mary. The maiden name for the mother is shown as Ng which likely means no last name shown. I will check the actual record. The RC parish was Athleague. No maiden name of the mother was shown on any of the 1819 records.

This would be a lead but not a confirmed record. Any siblings?

I found a marriage for a John Craven and Mary McLoughlin in 1808.  More research would be needed to determine if these are your ancestors.

    Marriage:            23-Jun-1808

Parish / District:                Athleague, Co. Roscommon

    Name:   John      Craven                 Mary     McLoughlin

    Witnesses: Thomas McLoughlin                  [illegible] Taoffe

You mentioned John had a brother Daniel. Perhaps this is his baptismal record? If it is, then he would have been born 26 years after his parents' marriage--if the above couple are his parents.  Not impossible, but perhaps not so common.

    Daniel Craven

    Birth:     13-Jul-1834

    Parish/District:   ATHLEAGUE RC

    Co. Roscommon

    Roman Catholic

    Father:  John Craven

    Mother:               Mary Craven

  • Hello Roger, I am so appreciative that you looked into this.   John Craven had at least 2 younger siblings, Daniel and Laurence and I think they all came over at the same time and with their mother Mary.  She died in 1852 in Louisiana.

Family info, confirmed by Obituaries and US Census shows birth of John as 1823 in Roscommon, Daniel in 1839.  I am just finding out about Laurence.

That does seem to be a large gap in age.  I wonder if they were half siblings from different fathers.

Daniel and Laurence remained in Louisiana.

John came to the US in 1846, married Mary Finnegan in Louisiana in 1848, had 2 children there and eventually moved to the Central Valley in California in 1856 and had many more children, including their youngest, my great great grandfather Thomas Craven.

Mary Finnegan, b.1826 was also from Roscommon.  Her parents are named as Elizabeth (1791-1867, died in Athleague Parish, Roscommon) and her husband Michael Finnegan b. 1784,died 1860. This is all info from my Louisiana cousin Trees.  I have reached out to them to understand how they verified this.

  • Mary Lou:

Patricia found an 1834 baptismal record for a Daniel Craven in Athleague. See her comment above. No Laurence Craven records shows up.

I was not able to locate the Mary Finnegan baptismal record with the parents names shown in your note.

  • My name is Daniel Joseph Craven and I live in New Orleans, La.  My great grandfather was Daniel Joseph Craven and was born in 1837 and died in1910 in New Orleans.  I have John Craven born in 1923 in Athaleague and married to Mary Finnigan.  I also have Mary Craven ( Married name) who was born in 1790 and died in New Orleans in 1852.  In fact, I have the title to the grave in St Patrick's #1 cemetery where she is buried.  I find it difficult to believe that JohN and Daniel are both sons of Mary.  Mary would have been 33 when John was born but she would have been 47 when Daniel was born if she was , in fact, Daniel's mother.  I expect that she was Daniel's grandmother.  I do show a Laurence Craven who was Daniel's brother.

I believe John left New Orleans after Mary died in 1852.  He and his wife, Mary and , I believe 2 children moved to California.  I suspect that Marylou, who began this thread is part of the California Cravens.  There is a family tree on ancestry managed by one of John's descendants whose last name, I believe, is Corradi(sp?).  I believe his name is Michael Corradi.  He has around 3000 of John's legacy on his tree.  Tree is Corradi-Barbagelata Family Tree.

I also believe there is a Craven face book group in California.  There is also a Sharlene Miller that is part of that group
