John Clancy, c1800-c1835, and Elizabeth Mary Ahearn, c1799-c1835, were likely both born in or near Waterford, Munster, Ireland. They likely married in or near Waterford, Ireland, in c1820. Nancy Clancy was born in Waterford, Ireland, on 4 Feb 1822, and her sister, Francis Ellen Clancy was also born in Waterford, Ireland, on 3 Feb 1825. There was another brother and another sister also likely born in Waterford.

This family of six were "falsely lured" by one Colonel William Cotter to move to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in the Fall of 1827. Colonel Cotter even promised them food, clothing, shelter, land, a “little” militia training, and even a stipend.

Most of these eager emigrants were from northern Cork county. About 3,100 Irish signed up to go and all ten ships set sail. The Clancy brother would die while en route to Rio.

Our Clancy people were among those who shipwrecked in route, and likely aboard the Charlotte and Maria, and after being cared for by natives near Cape Frio, Brazil, likely arrived in Rio in Dec. of 1827 or in January of 1828, where John "had" to join the Brazilian army.

Both these Irish mercenaries, along with the German mercenaries, revolted in June, 1828, and after the revolt was crushed, almost all to Irish were kicked out of Brazil and sent back to Ireland and/or England.

Our Clancy people/ancestors instead came to Portland, Maine, USA, late in 1828, most likely.
