The only information I know about my Irish ancestors comes from Scottish census records (1861, 1881) and my DNA which matches to Lough Mask and Lough Corrib area. I am searching for information on James Philben, born about 1810 in Mayo, according to the 1861 Scottish census, when he was a visitor. He married Catherine Leyden and their children, born in Ireland were John (b. abt 1831), Bridget (b. abt 1840), Margaret (b. about 1841) and Patrick (b. abt 1846). Son John and his siblings immigrated to Scotland but James and Catherine probably remained in Ireland (except for a visit to family in Scotland around 1861). Griffith's Valuation shows a James Philban in Cloonee, Ballyovey, Ballinrobe in 1857 and a James Philban in Kilkeeran, Balleyovey, Ballinrobe as well. Irish Civil Registration Index shows the death of a James Philbin, born about 1810 in Jan. - Mar. 1880 in Ballinrobe.

Balleyovey civil parish correlates to Tourmakeady RC parish. Apparently the Irish from Mayo who settled in Stirling, Scotland, came from Tourmakeady or Achill Island. Family Search.org says that baptisms in Tourmakeady didn't start being recorded until 1869 and marriages as well, at least they don't have them. Do they exist?

Is there any way that I can tell if either of these James Philbens, or the one who died, are the one that married Catherine Leyden and had the children listed above?

The RC records for Tourmakeady (Ballyovey) parish start in 1860 for baptisms and 1847 for marriages based on the Roots Ireland list of records for Co. Mayo parishes. Still too late for your Philbin records.

I went to the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie and located the actual image of the 1880 James Philbin death record listed in your message.

third record  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu… This James Philbin lived in Stonepark townland in Touaghty civil parish which is two parishes north of Ballinrobe parish.

I also located an 1891 death record for the James Philbin who lived in Kilkeeran. The informant was his son James so if your James Philbin did not have a son James then likely you can rule out the James Philbin in Kilkeeran.  see fourth record

  • Thank you for your reply. I will try to find family trees for the James Philbin in Kilkeeran and the one in Cloonee. From what I can see in Ancestry see people are mixing up the two. Are Kilkeeran and Cloonee near each other?

What I have found so far indicates that James from Kilkeeran did have a son James but that none of his children left for Scotland. They mostly stayed in Ireland, one went to America and one to England. So this is probably not the right one. I hope I can find info on the one from Cloonee

Does Griffith's Valuation show all heads of households or just rural or just urban people?

  • Sharron:

Griffiths would not show a small farmer (cottier) who was subletting a small plot of land. The cottier would have a small cottage where he and his family lived.

Cloonee is about six kilometers (four miles) west of Kilkeeran.
