Researching the Gilhooley family from Tipperary (Australian Immigration records). Born c1816, James came alone to Australia in 1839,at 23yo, a bounty immigrant.

His parents in Ireland, were James and Mary. James snr, a stonemason.

He married Bridget Nowlan and they established a family in South Western NSW.

I'm not up on townlands, parishes etc, so I have found James Gilhooley in Gurtnacre, Cordangan, Tipperary in the Tythe Books (1815-55) in 1830.

Can anyone explain the details recorded therein please? A James Gilloly is also recorded in the Tythe Book in the parish of Lattin...Is this nearby? Could it be spelt differently but referring to the same person?

How can I fid the places on a map? Any info much appreciated in tracking down James Snr and Mary.

Also are there any facsimiles of advertisements and announcements detailing immigration opportunities in the early 1800s?

Thank everyone. I wish you all well in these troubled times

Cathy

  • Hi Cathy,
James traveled on the ship CHINA.
The record you found in Cordangan Tipperary, would be his father.
If you copy and paste CordanganTipperary plus the word map into search you will see it is south of Tipperary Town.
On the ship record it says he was from (Tipp) this means Tipperary Town in County Tipperary.
In Giffiths Valuation look for Tipperary South Riding.
The county was divided into two Ridings. Thurles is the halfway point, now it's all one county.
The next place to look  is here........ I have searched and there is a death of a 7 Gilhooley listed.

This is a marriage of a Bridget Gilhooley, says her father was James and she was from Cordangan, he is James Doran and a teacher.
