This family

left Londonderry, Northern Ireland with three Children in 1807 on the ship Hannah arriving in Philadelphia, PA November 4th, 1807. I wonder where to begin to find what parish they belonged to. I believe they were protestant, but I am not sure. isabela had one daughter Eliza Beaty, two sons I believe.

  • Nancy,

The majority of emigrants from Ireland to North America in the 1700s and early 1800s were Protestant. Mostly Presbyterian and some Church of Ireland.  The native Irish population (mostly RC) didn’t start migrating in big numbers till a little later. Your ancestors name Beaty is Scottish in origin and the location (living or embarking from Londonderry) & timescale suggest to me that they were probably Presbyterian. And so probably descended from Scots who settled in Ulster in the 1600s.

Looking at the 1831 census of Co. Londonderry there were 30 Beaty/Beatty/Beattie households. Mostly Presbyterian and Church of Ireland but some RC.

Very few parishes in that part of Ireland have baptism records for the late 1700s and early 1800s and if you don't know where your family lived it’ll be a bit of a needle in a haystack.

Possibly DNA testing may be a way of matching with others who have additional information about where the family originate. Family Tree DNA reportedly has more people with Ulster roots than any other company. That obviously increases the chances of finding a match. You might want to try them or, if you have already tested, you can transfer your results to them for no fee.

The North of Ireland Family History Society are running an Ulster DNA project and can offer FTDNA testing kits at a reduced price.  http://www.nifhs.org (Go to DNA project on the website).
