Hello, some of my ancestors were Irvine's from the Ardstraw area. Does anyone know anything about the family? Thanks!

  • Bit more info.... my G G G grandfather was John Irvine of Deerpark near Newtownstewart. I think he may have been a doctor.

  • There are 3 townlands named Deerpark near Newtownstewart (Lower, Middle & Upper). I looked in Griffiths Valuation and the 1901 census but don’t see any Irvine families living there at either date. When do you think your ancestor was there?

  • I have a John James Irvine, who I think was born in Newtownstewart approx 1848 - father John (Labourer), married Eliza Jane English 02/07/1874 - they had a son 1875 in Ireland, went to New Zealand, and had more children, until Eliza died in 1888. Dont know if this is an help.

  • Here’s a link to John & Eliza Jane’s marriage certificate:

Both just gave their addresses as Newtownstewart. Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church which was Ardstraw Church of Ireland. That may be where she was baptised.

Here’s their son James’ birth certificate. Again the address was Newtownstewart.

John James was a labourer and they moved around a lot to follow available work. They can be very hard to trace. Birth registration started in 1864. Prior to that you have to rely on church records. Sadly Ardstraw’s early records were destroyed in the 1922 fire in Dublin and they now have no baptisms earlier than 1882.

You may struggle to find out much more about the couple, I fear. I looked for Thomas English’s death but did not find one in the area that fitted. Likewise for John Irvine, labourer. (Both may have died pre 1864).

English is not a very common surname in the Strabane registration area. John & Elizas was the only English marriage there between 1845 and 1901. So perhaps Eliza Jane had no siblings. Or at least none who married.

  • Hi Abi, through DNA matches my brother and I discovered we are descended from John Irvine, Surgeon, Deerpark, Ardstraw, Newtownstewart.   His wife was Sarah and from what we can see they had two children, Charles who ended up in Australia, and Mary Anne (our line) who married Richard Yoakley and moved to Dublin.  Like I said we only unraveled this with shared DNA matches, as the paper trail had us going in a very different direction.
