Looking to trace origin of my family, thought to originate from County Mayo. Hugh Tarney born 1821, possibly had 7 children. Son Thomas Tarney emigrated to England& married Bridget Roach.

Tony:
The surname Tarney was very rare in Ireland. In the mid-1850s there were only four Tarney head of household records for all of Ireland and none of the four were in Co. Mayo. Possibly the surname was Tierney and there were quite a few of this surname in Mayo, however, I did not locate any Thomas Tierney baptismal records with father Hugh in Mayo. The closest was a September 18th 1850 baptismal record in Ennis Co. Clare for a Thomas Tierney with father Hugh and mother Bridget Carmody.
Have you considered DNA testing?

Thanks for the quick reply. General Internet search has disclosed that Hugh Tarney born in Mayo 1821 had 7 children, (high lighting "9 photos & 26 records"). The details seem to tie in in with other known descendants beyond Hugh Tarney once his son Thomas arrived in England.
