Greetings, I have searched for a long time for the origins within Ireland for my great grandfather, Patrick Horan...all I have ever found regarding his place of birth was "Ireland".....he was born in abt 1837 ( determined by his age at death ), to Michael Horan and Nancy ( Ann ) Gleeson. He and at least, his mother, emigrated to Ontario Canada in about 1851-53. I have lots of information on him here in Canada but nothing beyond that. Recently I read some advice from an experienced genealogist that suggested examing the names of marriage witnesses and sponsors at baptisms ( R.C. ) could be helpful..Also, it was mentioned that emigrants usually settled in areas where friends and relatives from the original country had settled. So, I very carefully checked the witnesses and sponsors out, which was very time consuming, and I found that their origins were in Nenagh Tipperary. One of the names mentioned Killaloe, Lorrha & Dorrha. Another name which was connected to Patrick and Nancy Gleeson Horan, was Quinlivan, which I found was also out of Tipperary..........This is where I am right now in my research.....I would appreciate some suggestions as to what my next steps shoule be or if anyone has any information on possible connections...Thank you........Bonnie.

    Hi Bonnie . . .

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out . . . and to the namesake . . Horan of Tipperary . . .

Def. no known relation to the Horan in your query . . .

    So . . . here's my . . . very little contribution to your research . . .

    You . . have done extensive searching .  . .as you point out . . incl. talking to a Genealogist . . re. Horans/ Gleesons .  .

And . . our merry band of professional helpers here in I.R.O. . . would have looked at your problem . . done a little search of their own . ..

and discovered . . .like you . . .that there were NO obvious assists . . to add to the sum of knowledge . . and would have moved on to the next query . .

    ______________________________________________________________

Because of the surname . . Horan . . .which caught my attention . . . I too did the usual searches .  . and found NO useful insights . .

    _______________________________________________________________________

    But . . I offer a further CLUE . . to add to your puzzle . . . as follows . . .

    ________________________________________

    I went back to      http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp   . . .

    1823 -1837 . . ( very extensive ) Tax Roll . .

    Because Marriages in those years . . were mostly . . within the Parish . . i.e. walking/visiting distantances . .

    I had a look . . for a match .  . of Parish connections of those two surnames . . .

Horans and Gleesons . . . do come together in the Parish of    " Ardcrony "   (see map below )

If you study the map .. to the left of the Red indicator . . there is a sign for R493 . . this is where the Parish of Lorrah is situated . .
    close enough . . for possabilities . . .
    _______________________________________________________________
This is the only observation . . I can usefully add to your search . . .

    https://www.tipperarycoco.ie/heritage/genealogy-centre

    The above is a Prof. search assistant . . Paid ( not cheap ) .. . .

    Best I could do . . . best of luck with your search . . .

    Cheers . .. Eamonn.

  • Thankyou so much Eamonn! You are the first one of the Horan name I have ever been in contact with! I will certainly follow up on your

suggestion. I have to say that this has been a very difficult line to follow due to the lack of information and has been a struggle the

entire way so far...but, I have hope now that I am close to the answer! Thanks again........Bonnie

  • Hi,
In 1852 Griffiths Valuation Michael Horan listed in Redwood, Dorrah, which is Lorrah.
    Griffith's Valuation (askaboutireland.ie)

In the Tithe records  Michael Horan as Eamon says Ardcrony, townland of Mount Falcon.
The Tithe Applotment Books, 1823-37 (nationalarchives.ie)
This is page 2 Michael is at the bottom of the page. Mount Falcon was an estate ownd by Richard Falkner.

The Michael Kennedy above him lived across the road from Mount Falcon gates. He and his family went to Australia.
Further along the road was a Blacksmith Forge. This was where my Kennedy's lived.

I have searched the Baptism records for Lorrah and + and - 3 years from 1837 and can not find any names to Michae and Ann Gleeson.
