My ancestors are from the Duffy and Godfrey families
Tracing the Godfreys thru ancestory uk has got me back to a Bartholomew or Bartholomea but I can't find anything more
Michael Godfrey 1832 born in bohola has a father 'Batty' 1800 but it says he was born in Waterford. Would it be common for a man to live and marry in Waterford then move over to co mayo? Maybe the Waterford Bartholomew is wrong.
Michael had sibling James 1833
Michael and 'batty' moved to Yorkshire I am presuming famine time.
Michael married Ellen (1832)mcdonagh on 23rd July 1855 in ireland but it does not say which church?
She too was from Bohola

Any help Kevin as you have a lot of knowledge please. Thank you

  • "Batty" is a nickname for Bartholomew.  I have ancestors from Bohola and nearby parishes, but no known Duffy or Godfrey relatives.  The parish register for Bohola only goes back to 1857, but you might find them in the neighboring parish of Swinford.  The church in Swinford was built much earlier and the records there go much further back (to 1808 for marriages).  In earlier years, people were sometimes baptized or married in Swinford, even though they lived in a nearby parish (this happened in my family, in fact).

If you have your DNA results posted at GEDMATCH, you could compare to my kit there (T780556).  I have a number of second and third cousins from the area who are also on GEDMATCH, so we might find a connection.

  • Hi Kevin
    I can't afford the DNA
Do you have any info for a Walter Lowry who married Mary Kate Duffy in Yorkshire in 1856 cos they both put aghamore and swineford/foxford in their UK census
They where both born around 1830 in mayo
    Thanks

  • Hi, Suzhannah.  Sorry, but those surnames don't occur in my family (at least within the last 200 years).

Aghamore is on the other side of Swinford from Bohola.  Aghamore has some early marriage records, but the baptsmal records start way too late for what you want, and so do the records in Attymass.

Swinford would normally be a good bet, but unfortunately there's a gap in the baptismal records there from 1827-1841, just the time period you need.  It's a long  shot, but you might try searching in the online parish register for the parish of Bekan.  It's just south of Aghamore, and the baptismal records there go back to 1832.  When a parish did not yet have iits own church, people were sometimes baptized or married in a neighboring parish which did have a church.

Here's a link to where you can find the Bekan records:  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1050
