Any information please about Thomas Henry born 1808 or his father William born 1782?

Thomas went to Trinity College where he qualified as a doctor and then emigrated to Canada. He is my gg grandfather.

Thank you

  • Sue,

The name William Henry is fairly common in Co. Derry. Looking at the 1831 census there are 6 of them in the county. No easy way of telling which one, if any, is the right family. Probably the best way forward is to see what Trinity hold on Thomas Henry. If he qualified there, they should hold some personal information.  Former TCD students up to the 1840s are on the findmypast site (pay to view). I see an entry in 1826 and another in 1830 under “Alumni Dublienses”, either of which might relate to your ancestor.

  • You haven’t said what denomination your Henry family was. You need to know that to help decide what set of records to search. Castledawson Church of Ireland records start in 1718, the Presbyterian records cover 1703 to 1706 and then 1809 onwards and RC start in the 1840s which is obviously too late. There are copies of the Church of Ireland and Presbyterian records in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. They are not on-line and a personal visit is required to view them.

If William & Jane died in Scotland 1855 onwards, their parents names and occupations should be recorded on their death certificates.

There are very few records in Ireland for the 1700s and early 1800s and you may struggle to find much more about the family than you can get from church records.
