I am looking for information on the parents of my 2nd Great Grandfather, William Henderson.

His death notices states that he was born in Ballina, County Mayo on June 17th, 1817, and that he emigrated to Quebec Canada around 1825 with his father (no name listed).  Also notes that he was a long standing member of the Methodist church.  Canada Census information also records his religion as Methodist.

I have searched Ancestry and LDS FamilySearch and have found no records that might give any information regarding parents names, etc.  Based on family naming conventions at the time, I would guess the father's name to be William or John.

Any advise that you might be able to share would be most welcome!

  • Hello, Tanna.  William Henderson had itchy feet!  Have you put his profile on this site?

Irish GenealogyToolkit has guidance on researching Methodist ancestors in Ireland.      https://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com  Select heading 'Genealogy', then 'Church records'. Part 1 is 'Overview'. Part 2  ' Where to find Irish church records'. The page on Methodists in Ireland explains the complicated historical situation. Some Methodists (Wesleyan) split from Church of Ireland in 1816; Primitive Methodists remained with C. of I. until 1878. Until 2nd decade of 1800s Methodists usually had dual membership with their local (Anglican/C. of I. ) parish church and that's where they would have been baptised, married  and buried. Earliest Methodist registers date from 1815/16; most didn't start until 1830s/40s. A Methodist minister had a large circuit (area) and may have kept 1 register for the circuit rather than for individual churches. Methodists may also be in Quaker and Presbyterian registers.

According to Kilmoremoy entry in  'Topographical Dictionary of Ireland' by Lewis, 1837, there were places of worship for Wesleyan Methodists and  Baptists.

A Wesleyan Methodist chapel was built in Ballina in 1839. Ballina was a centre of a circuit of 7 churches. Rev. Charles McCormick began his ministry to the area in 1808.

    See www.methodisthistoryireland.org

For information about what may be available in the way of registers see Irish Genealogy.ie website     https://irishgenealogy.ie  Select heading 'Research'  > Irish records; what is available > Church records.

  • Maggie May,

Thank you so much for your response!  And for the information/suggestions.   I'll surely look into them.

I have not put his profile on the site yet, but will look into doing that as well.  He did have itchy feet :) and I definately feel like my Grandfather and Father both inherited that trait.  They both did alot of moving around.

  • Irish Ancestors website lists existing church registers (with dates & locations) for all denominations in Kilmoremoy parish. Earliest years in Methodist registers were 1830's decade. Church of Ireland registers survive from mid-eighteenth century.  https://www.johngrenham.com/records/church.php?civilparishid=1777&civil…

A list of Church of Ireland parish records is 'Table of Church of Ireland Parish Registers Throughout Ireland and where to find them',  updated March 2019.

https://www.ireland.anglican.org/about/rcb-library/online-parish-records   The information pages on this website are worth reading.

The parish list is in alphabetical order. For Ballina it says 'see Kilmoremoy'.  Be warned, there are an awful lot of parish names  Kil...... !  Original records are held by the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Records include vestry minutes. Kilmoremoy is in C. of I. diocese of Killala.

There is a note next to Kilmoremoy: 'some coverage at RootsIreland.ie'.

Kilmoreymoy C. of I. parish registers are in book and microfilm format at Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah. See World Catalogue  and Family Search websites.

    Another guide to finding C. of I. parish records is website Irish Geneaography       https://www.irish-geneaography.com/church-of-ireland-parish-records-fin…;

Away from churches, I looked up Henderson surname in Mayo in Griffiths Valuation. This was a survey and valuaton of land in Ireland in mid 19th century. It was after your ancestors left. There was only 1 entry for Henderson in County Mayo . John Henderson, tenant. Barony : Burrishole;  Union: Newport;  Parish: Achill;  Townland : Sraheens. He occupied a house but no land. So if there were any of your wider Henderson family left behind in Mayo, they weren't farming by 1855.                   www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation
