Hello: It is my understanding that my great grandparents were from Galway, Ireland and emigrated to Boston, MA

in 1870's. Married in Boston, MA 16 June 1878 [have marriage record].

I have run into many road blocks, and am not able to find Birth/Baptismal records, Emigration for the Clarks to Boston, MA.

I am currently on Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org. And have tried to find Irish records.

I am looking to travel to Dublin, and Galway in May 2020 to further the research. I would love feedback, help, any suggestions

to search further online or once in Ireland.

My great-grandfather: Peter Merrick [b. abt 1852 Galway, Ireland, d. 28 January 1931 Boston, MA].

His parents -  Father: John Merrick [b. abt 1830 [maybe Wale, UK - not sure]. Mother: Mary Barrett [Parents: Michael Barrett and Margarita Connelly

Margarita Connelly, Diocese Clonfert, Spouse Michael Barrett, Child Maria Barrett [Ireland, Catholic Parish Registers, 1655-1915 record,

Clonfert, Clontuskert 1827 - 1881] I believe this record is correct...

Many thanks! Judi

There are no Merricks in Galway in the Tithe Applotments 1824-42 (free at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/); there are 5 John Merricks from other counties however. No Merricks in Galway (or any other county) in the 1821 Irish Census http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/

rootsireland has 12 burial records for Merricks in Galway starting in 1834 but none are from Clonfert or Clontuskert; this is the only one from Rahoon; no graveyard mentioned of course!

    Name:PatrickMerickDate of Death:24-Jun-1834
    Age:
    Parish / District:RAHOONAddress:FreeportCounty:Co. GalwayStatus:
    Denomination:Roman Catholic

I checked my cd Memorials of the Dead Galway & Mayo but it has no Merricks listed.

Griffiths Valuation (free at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/  has 3 Merricks in Galway: 2 in Galway Town in Rahoon (1856) & 1 in Galway county (1857).

It was helpful of you to mention the sources you have used - thanks.

  • Hi Judi

This is a link to 1901 Census for Mary Barrett Merrick, her Son Bartholomew. Bartholomew Merrick, born 3rd Sep. 1854, had a twin brother John who emigrated to Boston.

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Barna/Seapoint/1374556/

Bartholomew (Barthly) was present at both of his parents deaths, John in 1900 and Mary in 1909

Bartholomew died in 1915, a single man. John Kelly from adjoining townland of Freeport was present.

I will endeavour to locate a grave, generally it will only be possible to locate a grave plot if a memorial was erected,
