I am researching my husband’s family story. His gg grandfather, Gregston Lockhart, (1789-1879) came to Brant County in Ontario circa 1837 with his wife Elizabeth Holmes (1802-1843) and four children: William, Sarah Jane, James and Robert. Two more children were born in Canada. Through a lucky break, I saw in an obituary that William was born in Armagh and was 12 when he arrived. However, I am stymied at any further family connections. I also have my suspicions that Gregston is a family name, so would like to know if he is connected to any Gregston families. Any leads or help with further research would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Patricia. The marriage records confirm that they indeed start out in Armagh and the exact date of their marriage. I am wondering if I gave you approximate birthdates of the four children born in Ireland that they could be tracked down as well. William 1829 or1830, Sarah (Sara) Jane 1833, James 1834, and Robert 1835 Their departure date from Ireland is between 1835-36 and 1839. They are Protestant, and according to Canadian census records of 1851 they are Church of England, Episcopal.

Hi, I looked on rootsireland for the baptisms, with no findings. It's possible that the records don't exist or just that they don't appear on rootsireland. I'm sorry I'm not more help with this.

Thanks again for trying to sort us out. I have one more request. Could you search for a female with surname Gregston who married surname Lockhart. Since Gregston Lockhart was born in 1789, his mother would have been born somewhere in the range of 1755 to 1770, and her marriage date could have been anywhere around 1775 to 1789. Is there a possible search in the Armagh marriage records for this wide ranging iffy set of facts? I feel convinced that our Gregston Lockhart ancestor has his mother's maiden name (or even his grandmother's maiden name) for a given name. Back in Canada here I have started to work with our local genealogy organization in Woodstock Ontario to sort out Gregston Lockhart's life here in Canada. It is great fun but challenging. Thanks once again for looking. Cheryl
